Chapter 6

Brandon moved so fast I barely saw him.
One second Gene was stepping toward Holly.
The next, Brandon stood between them.
“Say one more word to my daughter.”
Gene froze.
My daughter.
Not my wife’s daughter.
Not Brandon’s girl.
My daughter.
Holly heard it.
So did everyone.
Gene’s mouth twisted.
“You are throwing away your real family for someone else’s child.”
Melissa Crane opened her briefcase.
“That sentence was enough.”
Gene turned.
“What?”
Melissa removed a document.
“Edward Hale’s trust clause required either repeated exclusion or one public act of targeted cruelty toward a child Brandon legally or emotionally claimed.”
Gene laughed.
“Emotionally claimed? That’s not legal language.”
Melissa smiled.
“It is when drafted by a very angry retired judge.”
Arthur looked up.
“My father did that?”
“Yes,” Melissa said. “Because he knew Gene would eventually use a child as a weapon.”
Gene’s face reddened.
“I will contest it.”
“You can try.”
Melissa handed Brandon a packet.
“Effective immediately, Gene’s access to the Hale family trust is suspended pending review. Her residence in the family house is also conditional on Brandon’s approval.”
Gene staggered.
The woman who had spent decades deciding who belonged suddenly needed permission to stay.
It would have been satisfying if Holly had not been standing there, small and silent, listening to adults discuss the consequences of hurting her.
I knelt beside her.
“Do you want to go home?”
She nodded.
Gene snapped, “This is not over.”
Holly looked at her.
For once, my daughter did not shrink.
“Grandma,” she said softly, “I didn’t want your money. I wanted my name.”
Gene’s face collapsed for half a second.
Then hardened again.
Too late.
Melissa’s phone buzzed.
She read the message and frowned.
“Brandon, did your mother recently sell the lake cabin?”
Arthur stood.
May you like
“What lake cabin?”
Gene went completely still.
