Chapter 17

The verdict came on a humid afternoon.

Guilty.

Unlawful confinement of Clara.

Guilty.

Fraud.

Forgery.

Elder abuse.

Guilty.

Murder of Malcolm Pierce.

Guilty.

Conspiracy related to Edward Hale’s medical manipulation.

The room seemed to exhale.

Gene did not scream this time.

She sat very still.

As if stillness could turn back time.

At sentencing, Clara spoke first.

“You stole years from me,” she said. “But you did not get my last years.”

Arthur spoke next.

“You taught me to fear conflict more than cruelty. I will spend the rest of my life undoing that lesson.”

Then Brandon stood.

He looked at Gene.

“You told me blood made family real. You lied about my blood before I was born. My daughter, the child you rejected, became the reason the truth came out.”

Gene’s face tightened.

Brandon continued.

“So thank you for underestimating her.”

Holly squeezed my hand.

Gene received life.

Dr. Pierce received twenty years.

Silverline executives were charged with fraud.

The family trusts were restored.

The cabin returned to Arthur and Brandon.

Outside court, reporters shouted.

Brandon ignored them.

Holly asked, “Is Grandma gone?”

I brushed hair from her face.

“Yes.”

“For good?”

Brandon knelt.

“For good.”

She looked relieved.

That hurt.

Then she smiled.

That healed.
