Chapter 19

Two years later, Brandon opened the Hale Family Center in the restored lake cabin.
It served children in blended families, adoption transitions, custody trauma, and elder abuse cases.
Clara said Edward would have loved it.
Arthur said Malcolm would have too.
That was new.
Saying Malcolm’s name without shame.
Brandon kept both fathers’ photos in his office.
Arthur Hale, who raised him.
Malcolm Pierce, who wanted him.
Edward Hale, who protected the truth.
Holly drew all three as superheroes.
Brandon framed it.
Gene would have called it improper.
That made us love it more.
I watched Holly grow taller, louder, safer.
She corrected people now.
When someone at school asked if Brandon was her stepdad, she said, “He’s my dad. Step is just extra information.”
When a teacher asked for “real family” on a heritage project, Holly raised her hand and asked, “Do you mean biology or the people who show up?”
The teacher changed the worksheet.
Small justice.
Real justice.
One evening, Holly asked Brandon if she could visit Gene in prison someday.
My heart stopped.
Brandon stayed calm.
“When you’re older, if you still want to, I’ll go with you.”
Holly nodded.
“I don’t want to now.”
“That’s okay.”
“I just wanted to know I get to choose.”
Brandon hugged her.
“You do.”
That was the life we fought for.

Not a perfect life.
A chosen one.
