Chapter 18

We moved into the family house after summer.
Not because we wanted Gene’s throne.
Because Brandon wanted to turn it into something she would have hated.
A home.
We repainted the dining room.
Holly chose warm yellow.
Arthur said it looked like sunshine had finally been invited in.
The first Christmas after the trial, we hosted dinner.
No place cards.
Holly insisted.
“People know their names,” she said.
Fair point.
Arthur made cinnamon rolls from Clara’s recipe.
He burned the first batch.
Clara declared it a family tradition.
Aunt Brenda brought the horse-drawing kit upgraded with new pencils.
Holly wore the same gold dress, now too short, with leggings underneath.
She placed the cheap vanilla candle in the center of the table.
Not as a wound.
As proof.
Beside it sat the red velvet box.
Inside was no key now.
Just a folded card Holly wrote herself.
Family is who makes room.
Before dinner, Arthur stood.
“I want to say something.”
Everyone froze out of habit.
He smiled sadly.
“No speeches of control. Just gratitude.”
He looked at Holly.
“You gave me my name back. Grandpa.”
Holly ran to him.
He caught her and cried.
Brandon held my hand under the table.
No one laughed at tears.
May you like
No one weaponized manners.
No one made a child small.
