Chapter 4

We drove to Maple Street in silence.
Arthur sat in the back beside Holly.
He kept looking at her like he had seen her for the first time.
Not as a problem.
Not as proof Brandon had a life before his mother approved it.
As a child.
At the trust office, Brandon unlocked a small private vault.
Inside were folders.
A sealed envelope.
And an old video tablet labeled with his grandfather’s name.
Edward Hale.
Gene’s father-in-law.
The man who had died two years before I married Brandon.
Brandon opened the envelope first.
The deed was clear.
The family house belonged to Brandon.
Not Gene.
Not Arthur.
Brandon.
A second document made Arthur sit down.
It was a letter.
My son Arthur,
If Gene tells you I left her the house, she is lying. I watched her isolate you, control the accounts, and punish anyone who did not flatter her. I am leaving the house to Brandon because he still knows how to love without ownership.
Arthur covered his face.
Brandon read the next line.
And if Brandon ever brings a child into this family, by blood or by heart, she is family.
My throat closed.
Holly leaned against Brandon’s side.
“Does that mean me?”
He kissed her hair.
“Yes.”
Arthur cried then.
Quietly.
Like a man ashamed of needing tears.
“I let her do this,” he whispered.
Brandon’s jaw tightened.
“You didn’t write the tag.”
“No. But I sat there while she handed it to Holly.”
He looked at my daughter.
“I’m sorry.”
Holly studied him.
Then said, “You can call me Holly.”
Arthur laughed through tears.
“I would like that.”
Brandon turned on the tablet.
Edward’s face appeared.
Older.
Sharp-eyed.
Alive in light.
“If you are watching this,” he said, “Gene has gone too far.”
May you like
Then he looked straight into the camera.
“She has been stealing from this family for years.”
