Chapter 12

The word changed Arthur.

Grandpa.

One small word from Holly’s mouth, and the man seemed to stand taller.

Gene heard it too.

Her face twisted.

She had spent years denying Holly a place.

Now Holly had given Arthur one.

The investigation moved quickly after that.

Dr. Alan Pierce was questioned.

He denied everything until police found payments from Gene hidden through Silverline Holdings.

Then he talked.

He admitted signing false cognitive evaluations for Clara.

He admitted preparing one for Arthur.

He admitted helping Gene hide Edward’s decline.

But the worst admission came later.

Malcolm Pierce did not die in a boating accident.

He survived long enough to reach shore.

A witness saw him.

Then Gene found him first.

His death had been ruled accidental because Alan Pierce signed the report.

Brandon sat in our kitchen when Melissa told us.

Holly was asleep upstairs.

Arthur was at the hospital with Clara.

The room felt too small.

“My biological father was murdered by my mother,” Brandon whispered.

I did not know what to say.

So I held his hand.

He looked at me.

“And she spent my whole life telling me blood was everything.”

I nodded.

“She weaponized what she never respected.”

He laughed bitterly.

Then cried.

I held him until the grief passed through enough for breath.

The next morning, Brandon went to see Arthur.

He stood by Clara’s hospital bed.

Arthur looked nervous.

As if Brandon might leave him.

Brandon crossed the room and hugged him.

“You’re my dad,” he said.

Arthur broke.

Clara cried.

I stood in the doorway with Holly.

She whispered, “Good.”

Yes.

May you like

Good.

After so much poison, something true had survived.
