Chapter 27 - Halloween AgainNoah was twenty-five when Hawthorne Heights celebrated Halloween in a way that finally felt ordinary.

Tasha organized.

No best-house competition.

Just maps showing quieter porches, allergy-friendly treats, no-doorbell houses, and accessible routes.

One symbol meant:

No speaking required.

Kids could point.

Wave.

Hold out a bag.

Use AAC.

Sign.

Say nothing.

Candy still happened.

Noah helped design the map.

He insisted his name not appear.

Jake volunteered at Station 14’s safety booth.

Melissa handed out full-size candy bars because becoming a grandmother had apparently made her reckless with finances.

A child dressed as a firefighter approached.

Maybe eight.

He held out his bag silently.

Melissa smiled.

Placed candy inside.

“Happy Halloween.”

The child waved.

Then left.

No lesson.

No applause.

No one demanded words.

Noah watched from the sidewalk.

Typed:

GOOD RULE.

Jake looked at him.

“No rule, actually.”

May you like

Noah smiled.

Exactly.
