Chapter 26 - Evelyn’s Last LetterEvelyn wrote one final letter when Noah was twenty-three.

She was ill.
Not dying immediately.
But older.
She sent it to Melissa, with instructions to discard unless Noah wanted it.
Noah read.
Evelyn wrote:
For years I wanted you to understand me. I now think that was another way of asking you to carry my discomfort.
Noah paused.
I am sorry.
Then:
I used to believe good neighborhoods were places where everybody followed the same rules and behaved in ways I understood. I was wrong. A community that has room only for people like the person writing the rules is not a community.
Noah typed:
BETTER SENTENCE.
Melissa smiled.
“Than what?”
OLD EVELYN SENTENCES.
Yes.
The letter ended without request.
No response.
No meeting.
No forgiveness question.
Noah placed it back in the envelope.
KEEP?
“Your choice.”
He thought.
RECYCLE.
Melissa laughed.
May you like
They recycled it.
Not every apology needed preservation.
