Chapter 19 - The Apology RequestWhen Noah was fourteen, Evelyn requested permission through lawyers to send him a written apology.

Melissa asked Noah.
He understood the question.
He selected:
READ FIRST MOM.
Melissa read it.
Evelyn wrote:
Noah, I treated your silence as disrespect because I believed my way of communicating was the correct way. It was not.
Good.
I touched you when I had no right to.
Clear.
I took your candy bag and embarrassed you.
Accurate.
I also used complaints about you as part of a neighborhood campaign that should never have involved you.
No excuses.
Then:
You do not need to forgive me or respond.
Melissa gave it to Noah.
He read slowly.
Then set it down.
Typed:
SHE KNOW NOW?
“I think she knows more than before.”
GOOD.
“Do you want to answer?”
NO.
Done.
The letter went into a file.
Not memory box.
Not bedroom.
File.
Months later Noah asked:
EVELYN STILL BAD?
Melissa thought carefully.
“She did bad things.”
Noah frowned.
Not same question.
Melissa corrected:
“I don’t know what kind of person she is now.”
That satisfied him.
