Chapter 8

Domenico made the decision everyone around him told him not to make.

He reported the full banquet incident.

Including himself.

His lawyers provided unedited estate security footage, guest statements, medical documentation, and the sequence leading to the physical confrontation to the appropriate authorities.

No selective clip showing Marcus swinging first without what followed.

No quiet payment.

No family arrangement.

No friendly official.

Everything.

His uncle nearly shouted across the conference table.

“You’re volunteering evidence against yourself.”

“Yes.”

“You struck your wife.”

“Yes.”

“You hit Marcus.”

“Yes.”

“They provoked you.”

“Maybe.”

“You know they did.”

“I know what they did. I don’t yet know why.”

His uncle stared at him.

Domenico continued.

“If I hide my part, every accusation they make about me becomes easier to believe.”

That silenced the room.

Then Domenico went further.

He temporarily stepped away from day-to-day leadership of Falcone Development Group while an independent committee completed the financial review.

Not because Valentina asked.

Because he refused to let the legitimacy of the audit depend on whether he personally benefited from its outcome.

Marcus was suspended.

Valentina was removed from financial access pending review.

Outside accountants took control of the suspicious vendor records.

Domenico also moved Ruby out of the estate.

Not permanently.

She stayed with his sister Anna in a normal suburban home while child therapists assessed what would make her feel safe.

Domenico visited daily.

He slept in Anna’s guest room several nights because Ruby woke crying.

The family reacted like he had abandoned the mansion.

Domenico did not care.

The choices were difficult to reverse quietly.

Authorities now had the footage.

The board had independent control.

Auditors had records beyond Domenico’s reach.

Ruby was physically outside the family hierarchy.

Valentina’s strategy—whatever it was—could no longer depend on Domenico hiding behind the Falcone name.

That evening Lauren called.

“We found something.”

“What?”

“Not enough to conclude yet.”

“What?”

“A draft filing.”

Valentina’s divorce attorney had prepared an emergency application before the banquet.

The document described a hypothetical future incident in which Domenico became violent “in the presence of family guests and children.”

It requested temporary exclusive occupancy of the estate.

Temporary protection for Ethan.

Temporary limits on Domenico’s access to jointly used household property.

And notice to business directors that a domestic violence allegation could affect active financing discussions.

Domenico read the date.

The draft was created thirty-six hours before dinner.

His voice became quiet.

“She wrote the aftermath before the incident.”

Lauren corrected him.

“Her lawyer drafted options.”

“Before.”

“Yes.”

Domenico looked toward the dark window.

For the first time, he stopped asking whether the banquet had been staged.

He started asking how much of it had been.
