Chapter 5

Ethan gave Daniel a detail nobody expected.
Not during an interrogation.
During dinner.
“Mom said I had one job.”
Daniel immediately stopped the conversation and contacted the child therapist.
The next day, Ethan met with the therapist independently.
His account was simple.
Valentina told him to sit in Ruby’s chair.
He did not want to.
He liked his normal place.
Valentina promised him a new gaming system if he stayed there even when Ruby cried.
The therapist asked whether Ethan understood why.
“No.”
“Did anyone else talk about it?”
“Uncle Marcus.”
“What did he say?”
Ethan looked embarrassed.
“He said don’t get up when Mr. Falcone comes out.”
“Why?”
“He said Mom needed him to see.”
“See what?”
Ethan shrugged.
“Ruby on floor.”
Domenico heard the summary later.
He sat completely still.
Lauren watched him.
“He’s eight.”
“I know.”
“His memory may be incomplete.”
“I know.”
“But it fits.”
“Yes.”
That was the part neither liked saying aloud.
The suitcases.
The chair.
The timing.
The open atrium.
The outsiders invited.
Ethan told to stay in place until Domenico saw Ruby.
Marcus stepping between them.
Everything kept circling one point.
Domenico’s reaction.
Then Daniel called Lauren again.
He had found a message Valentina sent him the afternoon of the banquet.
Keep your phone on tonight. If something happens, Ethan may need you quickly.
Daniel had replied:
What’s happening?
Valentina never answered.
Lauren added it to the timeline.
Domenico looked toward her.
“She knew.”
“She expected something.”
“Same difference.”
“No.”
Lauren folded her hands.
“The difference matters.”
Domenico understood.
She was right.
Again.
The financial review deepened.
The suspicious vendors shared a bookkeeping service.
Two had owners with prior business relationships to Marcus.
One leased office space from an LLC in which Valentina had a minority interest.
That did not prove theft.
It proved connections they should have disclosed.
Chloe found over $1.8 million in questionable invoices across eighteen months.
Some services were real.
Others difficult to verify.
A few appeared duplicated.
Marcus’s attorney called it administrative sloppiness.
Valentina’s attorney said she signed based on Marcus’s representations.
Marcus said Valentina handled financial oversight.
Each began edging away from the other.
That was useful.
Then Lauren found something that bothered her more than the money.
Valentina had met with a divorce attorney eleven days before the banquet.
Nothing wrong with that.
People consulted lawyers before separating.
But her questions were unusually specific.
What happens if a spouse becomes physically violent during a family event?
Can a temporary protective order affect access to jointly owned property?
Can allegations of violence affect a spouse’s authority over family businesses if board members believe the conduct creates reputational risk?
Domenico read the consultation summary.
She had been preparing for a violent incident before one occurred.
Now there were only two possibilities.
May you like
Valentina genuinely feared him.
Or she expected to create the conditions for exactly what she had asked about.
