Chapter 2

Ruby’s pediatrician found no serious injury from the fall.
That should have been comforting.
It was not.
The child therapist who met Ruby the next morning focused on only what the girl herself remembered.
No leading questions.
No asking whether Valentina hated her.
No asking whether Marcus was bad.
Ruby said Valentina had told her after breakfast:
“Tonight Ethan sits by Daddy.”
Ruby said she argued.
Valentina replied:
“Then maybe Daddy will finally decide who belongs upstairs.”
The therapist asked what that meant.
Ruby shrugged.
“Grandma room?”
There was no grandmother living in the house.
Children attached old names to rooms.
The important part was that Valentina had apparently been preparing Ruby for the conflict before the banquet.
Then Ruby said something else.
“Uncle Marcus said not to cry too early.”
The therapist stopped there.
Domenico heard about the sentence afterward.
“Not to cry too early?”
Lauren nodded.
“That’s what she said.”
“What does that mean?”
“We don’t know.”
Domenico hated those three words.
He was getting used to them.
Meanwhile, Daniel arrived to take Ethan.
He did not storm into the mansion.
He did not accuse Domenico.
He asked to see his son.
Ethan ran to him.
That was enough to tell Domenico the boy had not expected the night to end this way.
Before leaving, Daniel asked for five minutes privately.
“You need to know Valentina’s been asking strange custody questions.”
Domenico looked at him.
“About Ethan?”
“About both kids.”
“Explain.”
Daniel had received an email from Valentina two weeks earlier asking whether Ethan could spend more time at the Falcone estate after the wedding season ended.
That part was ordinary.
Then she asked whether Daniel would sign a revised parenting schedule giving her longer uninterrupted stretches.
He refused.
“Why?”
“Because she wouldn’t explain why.”
“Did she say anything about Ruby?”
Daniel hesitated.
“She said things were changing at the estate and she wanted Ethan ‘recognized properly before decisions got made.’”
Domenico’s expression changed.
“Recognized how?”
“I asked. She never answered.”
Lauren took notes.
Daniel continued.
“Then three days ago, she asked me something else.”
“What?”
“If there were ever a violent incident in front of Ethan, would I come get him immediately.”
Domenico stared at him.
“Those exact words?”
“Pretty close.”
“Before last night?”
“Yes.”
Lauren looked up.
There it was.
Not proof.
But another piece.
Valentina had asked about a violent incident before one occurred.
Domenico stood by the window.
“Did she sound afraid of me?”
Daniel thought carefully.
“No.”
“What did she sound like?”
“Prepared.”
That word stayed with Domenico.
Prepared.
Valentina had packed Ruby’s visible belongings.
Prepared Ethan to take her chair.
Asked his father what would happen after violence.
Then Marcus had grabbed Domenico’s jacket and swung first.

The whole night was beginning to look less like a family argument.
And more like a sequence.
