Chapter 20

Valentina’s first letter to Ruby arrived when Ruby was twelve.

It came through attorneys.

Not Ethan.

That mattered.

Valentina asked permission before writing.

No direct contact.

No hidden message through her son.

Ruby’s therapist reviewed the request.

Domenico wanted to say no.

He did not.

That had become a pattern he disliked.

Ruby asked:

“What she want?”

“To apologize.”

“She already did court?”

“Not to you.”

Ruby thought.

“Letter only?”

“Yes.”

“Can read first?”

“You can ask Lauren or your therapist to review it.”

“You?”

Domenico hesitated.

“If you want.”

Ruby looked at him.

“No.”

That hurt less than he expected.

Lauren reviewed it.

No manipulation.

No request for forgiveness.

No complaint about Daniel.

No explanation of punishment.

Ruby read it herself.

Valentina wrote:

Ruby,

I pulled your chair away on purpose.

I wanted you to fall.

I wanted your father to see you on the floor while Ethan sat in the place beside him.

The suitcases upstairs were not real packing.

Marcus and I arranged them so your father would believe your room was being taken away.

You were five.

Ethan was eight.

Neither of you understood what we were doing.

That was part of why we used you.

I am sorry.

Valentina.

Ruby stopped.

Read one line again.

Neither of you understood.

Then:

“She liked that.”

Domenico looked at her.

“What?”

“That we didn’t know.”

He felt cold.

“Yes.”

Ruby continued.

“Because easier.”

“Yes.”

“Did she think I would cry?”

“Yes.”

“Did she want?”

“Yes.”

Ruby looked toward him.

“Did she know you hit people?”

He could have softened.

“No.”

She stared.

He corrected himself.

“Yes.”

That mattered.

“She used that too?”

“Yes.”

Ruby looked back at the page.

“So everybody was thing.”

“What?”

“Me thing.”

She counted.

“Ethan thing.”

Another finger.

“Suitcase thing.”

Another.

“Chair thing.”

Then:

“You thing.”

Domenico sat completely still.

Yes.

Valentina and Marcus had converted everyone into mechanisms.

Ruby’s fear.

Ethan’s obedience.

Domenico’s violence.

Even Valentina’s own body inside the confrontation.

All used toward delay.

Ruby asked:

“Did you know she scared of you sometimes?”

That surprised him.

“Some.”

“Was she?”

“Yes.”

“Then she right?”

Domenico understood the question.

“She was right that I could be intimidating.”

Ruby waited.

“She was wrong to create danger around two children because of it.”

“Both?”

“Yes.”

Again.

Both truths.

Ruby folded the letter.

“Do I answer?”

“No.”

“Can I?”

“Yes.”

She wrote:

I KNOW IT WAS ON PURPOSE.

Nothing more.

Valentina received it.

No reply came.

Weeks later Ruby asked Ethan whether he knew about the letter.

He did.

His mother had told him only that she had asked permission to apologize.

Not the content.

Ruby showed him.

Her choice.

Ethan read it.

Then looked sick.

“She says she used me.”

“Yes.”

“I know.”

That was different from an adult telling him.

He folded the paper carefully.

“I’m sorry.”

Ruby stared.

“You didn’t pull it.”

Same sentence.

May you like

Six years later.

Still true.
