Chapter 11

The twist did not make Domenico innocent.

That became important immediately.

His attorneys argued context.

Marcus attacked first.

Valentina reached toward Ruby after already knocking the child down.

Domenico responded in the middle of a rapidly escalating confrontation.

Those facts mattered.

So did the fact that he struck both adults.

Domenico did not demand that everyone pretend otherwise.

He accepted the legal process.

The outcome would take time.

Valentina’s attorneys tried to use his admission as proof that her fears had been justified.

Lauren’s answer was careful.

“Fear does not retroactively authorize staging children into a confrontation.”

Both truths could exist.

Domenico had created a life where people reasonably understood him as dangerous.

Valentina had deliberately manipulated that reputation to provoke a public incident.

One did not cancel the other.

Daniel focused on Ethan.

He requested temporary primary custody.

Valentina opposed it at first.

Then her own attorney told her the evidence involving Ethan was bad.

She had promised him a reward for remaining in Ruby’s chair.

Instructed him not to move when the confrontation began.

Told Daniel in advance to remain available.

Ethan had been placed inside an adult plan he could not understand.

The family court granted Daniel temporary primary residence while evaluations continued.

Domenico supported it.

That surprised Valentina.

“You’re taking his side?”

“There are no sides.”

“He hates me.”

“He is Ethan’s father.”

“You always disliked Daniel.”

“I did.”

Domenico paused.

“That doesn’t make him unsafe.”

Valentina stared at him.

For years, Domenico had treated personal dislike like useful evidence.

Now he was learning not to.

Ruby remained with Anna during the most chaotic weeks.

She visited Domenico’s new temporary residence rather than the estate.

The first afternoon, she asked:

“Is my room gone?”

“No.”

“Does Ethan live there?”

“No.”

“Is he mad?”

“No.”

“Is Valentina mad?”

Domenico took a breath.

“She made a very bad choice.”

Ruby looked at him.

“Because she doesn’t love me?”

There was no good answer.

Domenico chose the accurate one.

“I don’t think that’s why.”

“Then why?”

“Because grown-ups sometimes care about their problems so much they forget children aren’t tools.”

Ruby frowned.

“What tools?”

“Things people use.”

“I’m not hammer.”

Domenico almost smiled.

“No.”

May you like

He pulled her close.

“You’re definitely not a hammer.”
