Chapter 9 - I FIGHT BACK

I returned home before dawn.

Elara was sitting exactly where I had left her—at the kitchen table, head in her hands, pale and shivering. She looked up the moment I walked in, eyes red and swollen, terrified of what I would say.

I placed my phone on the table. Hit play on the final recording Jared had captured in the lawyer’s office.

Vivian’s voice. Clear. Cold.

*“Frame the wife. She loves the boy. She will never defend herself well. Once suspicion falls on her, Adrian will turn away. And then we finish what we started.”*

Elara listened. She sank back in her chair, breath leaving her in a ragged sob.

“It wasn’t me,” she whispered. “I didn’t—”

“I know,” I said quietly. “I know.”

I sat beside her then, took her trembling hands, and told her everything. The lawyer. The secret sibling relationship. The framing. The murder of my father. Every carefully laid trap designed to destroy us both and leave Ethan unprotected.

Elara wept, tears streaming unchecked.

“I only wanted to protect Ethan,” she said brokenly. “I suspected Vivian was poisoning your father. I knew she would come after him. So I asked Jared to help me catch her. I thought if the brake failed… she would be watched. She would be caught. I never dreamed she would try to kill him. I never dreamed there was someone else pulling every string.”

“I know,” I said again. “And you should have told me. We should have faced it together. But Elara—none of this excuses keeping secrets. Especially not from me.”

“I know,” she said. “And I am sorry. More than I can say.”

We sat in silence as the sun began to rise. Somewhere outside, the lawyer was running. Vivian sat in jail believing her plan had succeeded. And Ethan slept upstairs, innocent of the war waged around him.

But they had made one fatal mistake.

They had underestimated us.

“They want Ethan dead,” I said, standing and pulling Elara gently to her feet. “They want us broken, fighting each other, blind to the real enemy. That will not happen. We will fight back. Together. And we will take every single one of them down.”

Elara lifted her head. Her eyes were still wet, but something had returned to them. Strength. Resolve.

“What do we do?” she asked.

“We finish what they started,” I said. “We expose the lawyer. We dismantle their web. And we make certain no one ever dares come near our son again.”
