Chapter 8 - REVERSAL OF FORTUNE

I drove through the dark with Ethan strapped safely in his car seat behind me. He slept peacefully, unaware that his own mother had helped set the stage for what happened.

Elara had admitted it. She had asked Jared to disable the brake. She had paid him. She had planned a trap that nearly cost our son his life. Whether she intended it or not… she had opened the door for Vivian to walk through and attempt murder.

And yet… had she known Vivian would take it that far? Or had she truly been as blindsided as I was?

My phone rang. Jared.

“Adrian—don’t do anything yet. I found something.”

“What?” I snapped.

“The texts. The ones supposedly from Elara.” Jared sounded breathless, running. “They were sent from my phone. But I didn’t send them. Someone accessed my account remotely. And the payment—Adrian, Elara didn’t send that money. The account was accessed by someone else. Someone who already had full access to both your names.”

I gripped the steering wheel. “Who?”

“Vivian’s lawyer,” Jared said. “He’s been handling your family’s finances for years. He set up the transfers. He spoofed the messages. He planted every piece of evidence pointing to Elara.”

My mind spun. “Why?”

“Because Vivian knew if she got caught she would need someone to frame. She set Elara up from the very beginning. Paid the money herself through a loophole in the accounts. Sent the texts. Left the trail. All to make it look like Elara masterminded everything.”

“Why are you telling me this now?”

“Because I found the paperwork in the lawyer’s office,” Jared said. “Hidden files. And Adrian… Vivian didn’t work alone. The lawyer is her half-brother. They planned this together years ago. Your father found out. That’s why they killed him.”

I pulled the car over to the shoulder of the road.

Everything shifted again.

Vivian and the lawyer. Secret siblings. A plot years in the making. My father murdered when he discovered the truth. Elara framed perfectly. Jared used then discarded. And Ethan… Ethan was the final obstacle standing between them and everything.

Elara had not masterminded anything. She had tried to fight fire with fire and nearly gotten burned. But the true architect of it all sat quietly behind the scenes, weaving every thread, planning every escape route.

The lawyer.

I restarted the engine. “Where are the files, Jared?”

“Emailed to you already. Check your inbox. And Adrian—he’s gone. His office is empty. He knew I was digging. He fled twenty minutes ago.”

I tapped my screen. One new email. Attached—hundreds of pages. Records. Letters. Birth certificates. Poison purchase orders. Payment trails. Everything.

And at the bottom of the final page… a note in Vivian’s handwriting.

*Once the boy falls and the wife hangs… it is all ours.*
