Chapter 11 - THE FALLOUT

I did not return that night.
I stayed in a hotel room, staring at the ceiling, reading my father’s letter again and again until my eyes burned. Every memory shifted. Every moment I had cherished felt suddenly like a deception.
Ethan’s smile. His tiny hands reaching for me. The way he said Dada. None of it belonged to me. Not truly.
And Jared. Jared had stood on that staircase. He had watched his own son nearly die. Had he known? Or had Vivian kept that truth from him too, just as Elara had?
My phone rang repeatedly. Elara. Jared. The detective. I answered none of them. Until a text arrived from Jared, plain and terrifying:
*She’s gone. Elara took Ethan and left. Left a note. Said she’s going somewhere no one will find them. She’s terrified you’ll take him away. And she’s terrified Vivian will tell me the truth.*
I sat up straight.
Vivian.
I called the detective. “Has Vivian been communicating with anyone? Any messages sent out?”
“One letter smuggled out yesterday,” he said. “To Jared.”
My blood ran cold.
“What did it say?”
“That Ethan is his son. And that Elara has been lying to both of you.”
Everything clicked into place. Vivian had sent that letter knowing exactly what would happen. Jared would be devastated. Elara would panic. I would be furious. We would tear each other apart. And in the chaos… she would find a way to finish what she started.
I called Jared. He answered on the first ring, his voice hollow and broken.
“She told me,” Jared said. “Everything. Is it true, Adrian? Is he mine?”
“It is,” I said. “But listen to me—Vivian sent that letter to destroy us. To scatter us so she can hunt Ethan down. Elara took him to protect him. To protect all of us. If you love that boy… help me find her before Vivian does.”
Silence stretched. Then Jared said quietly:
May you like
“I do love him. Even if I never knew. Where do we start?”
“She will go to the one place no one expects,” I said. “The safe house your family used to hide in during emergencies. The cabin deep in the mountains. She is there.”
