Chapter 20 - THE BEGINNING

One year to the day after Ethan fell down those stairs, we gathered in the garden.
Sunlight filtered through the old oak trees. Flowers bloomed where once there had been only fear. Ethan ran unsteadily across the grass, laughing, his small hands outstretched. He was whole. He was happy. He was ours.
Jared stood near the gate, hands in his pockets, watching him smile. He met my gaze and nodded. A quiet truce. A quiet promise. He would always be part of Ethan’s story, but I would always be his father.
Elara slipped her hand into mine. She looked different now—stronger, calmer, as though a great weight had finally lifted from her shoulders. She had nothing left to hide. Nothing left to fear.
“He looks like you,” she said softly.
I smiled. “He looks like himself. That is enough.”
Ethan stumbled, caught his balance, and kept coming straight toward me. I knelt and caught him in my arms, lifting him high against my chest. He smelled of sunshine and soap and home. He wrapped his arms tight around my neck and whispered my name.
My heart swelled so full it ached.
I had not chosen his blood. But I had chosen him. I had chosen to love him, to protect him, to stand between him and every darkness in the world. That was what made a father. Not DNA. Not a name. Choice.
I looked at Elara. She was crying quietly, tears of joy this time, no fear in sight. I pulled her close too, until all three of us stood together, wrapped in sunlight.
“We survived,” she whispered.
“We survived,” I agreed. “And whatever comes next… we face it together. No more lies. No more secrets. Just us.”
Ethan pulled back and looked up at me with wide, trusting eyes. “Dada?”
“Yes, little one?”
“I love you.”
My breath caught. I kissed his forehead, then Elara’s.
“I love you too. More than anything. Forever.”
Somewhere the wind stirred the leaves. The shadows of the past had not vanished entirely—they never would. But they no longer terrified us. Because we stood together. Stronger. Braver. Whole.

And as Ethan laughed and reached again for the sunlight, I knew with absolute certainty: this was not the end. It was only the beginning.
