Chapter 10 - THE MIDPOINT REVELATION

The next twenty-four hours were a blur of action.
I sent the files to the lead detective. I called every contact I had to locate the lawyer. I placed Ethan under twenty-four-hour guard in a secure facility while Elara and I worked side by side, piecing together the full extent of the conspiracy.
And then, buried deep in a handwritten letter dated two weeks before my father’s death… I found the revelation that changed everything.
I read it three times before I could breathe properly again.
My father’s handwriting, shaky but unmistakable.
*“Vivian has a brother. A lawyer. He has been altering documents. If anything happens to me, watch them both closely. And Adrian… there is one more thing. Ethan may not be my blood. Not yours, either. Elara was pregnant when you married. And I believe Vivian knows the truth. She will use it to destroy him. Protect that child as if he were your own. Because regardless of blood… he is yours in every way that matters.”*
The letter slipped from my fingers.
Elara found me staring at the wall, face drained of all color. She picked up the paper. Read it. She swayed, hand flying to her mouth.
“You knew?” I asked, my voice barely audible.
She nodded slowly, tears spilling over instantly.
“I found out shortly before the wedding,” she whispered. “My first husband… he left me. I thought I had lost the baby. I married you believing… believing it was too late to tell you. I was terrified you would leave me. I told myself I would tell you eventually. And then I grew to love you so completely… and Ethan was born… and I just… I couldn’t.”
“Who is his father?” I asked.
Elara’s voice broke.
“Jared.”
The world stopped turning.
I stared at her. At the woman I had married. The woman I loved. And then the pieces rearranged themselves into a nightmare new picture.
Jared. Her brother-in-law. The man who had helped her frame the tampering. The man who had stood at the top of the stairs with Vivian. The man who had handed her the remote.
Ethan’s biological father.
Vivian had known. That was why she hated the baby so. That was why she called him illegitimate. That was why she wanted him dead. Not just for the will… but to expose the shame. To ruin us all.
And Jared… had he pushed the stroller knowing it might kill his own son?
Elara fell to her knees before me, clutching my legs, weeping uncontrollably.
“I never told him!” She sobbed. “I swear it! He does not know! I kept it buried! I was going to tell you on Ethan’s first birthday! I just needed time! Adrian—please—look at me—Ethan is still your son! In every way that matters! You are the only father he has ever known!”
I stepped back, away from her touch. My mind reeling. Betrayal unlike anything I had ever felt burned through me. A lie from the very beginning. A child raised as mine belonging to another man. Her brother.

And Vivian… Vivian had known all along. That was why she whispered those final words on the porch. That was why she accused Elara. She was telling the truth in the cruelest possible way.
I turned and walked out of the room. Out of the house. Into the cool morning air. Leaving Elara weeping on the floor behind me.
