Chapter 8

Marvin Pierce turned on Vanessa first.

That did not surprise Nora.

“Men like Marvin love conspiracy until prison enters the room,” she said.

He admitted the fake pregnancy.

The forged prenup.

The custody plan.

The staged reports against Noah.

But he denied knowing anything about Laura’s death.

Detective Brooks believed half of that.

The useful half.

Vanessa was charged with fraud, forgery, child emotional abuse, filing false reports, and conspiracy.

The investigation into Laura became separate.

More serious.

More dangerous.

Noah began therapy.

Dr. Lane used dolls, drawings, and gentle questions.

Noah drew a balloon with teeth.

Then a small boy under a table.

Then a woman with no face.

When Dr. Lane asked who she was, Noah whispered, “Fake mom.”

I cried in the hallway.

Grace found me.

“You don’t get to collapse forever,” she said softly.

“I know.”

“But you get five minutes.”

So I took five minutes.

Then I went back in.

Noah needed me whole enough.

Not perfect.

Whole enough.

My mother asked to apologize to him.

Dr. Lane said slowly.

So Elaine wrote a letter first.

Dear Noah,

I believed Vanessa because I wanted your daddy to be happy. I should have listened when you looked scared. Adults should protect children first. I am sorry.

Noah listened.

Then he said, “She can come for pancakes but no hugging.”

My mother cried when I told her.

May you like

Noah made the rules.

That was the beginning of safety.
