Chapter 17

Laura’s trust stayed untouched.

Nora added protections after everything Vanessa tried.

Margaret became co-trustee with me.

Thomas reviewed every statement.

Noah liked that.

“Lots of guards,” he said.

“Yes.”

“Good.”

We created the Laura Hale Truth Fund with part of the civil restitution Vanessa was ordered to pay.

It supported children whose warnings were ignored during family abuse cases.

Noah chose the symbol.

A small phone with a heart on the screen.

I worried it was too connected to his trauma.

He said, “The phone helped.”

So the phone stayed.

At the launch, I spoke.

“My son saved himself with evidence no child should have had to gather,” I said. “This fund exists so adults learn to listen before children have to prove pain.”

Noah sat between Margaret and Elaine.

He wore a tie with dinosaurs on it.

Afterward, a woman approached me crying.

“My daughter says my boyfriend scares her.”

I took her hand.

“Believe her tonight.”

She did.

Three weeks later, she sent a letter.

You helped me leave before something happened.

I showed Noah.

He read it twice.

Then whispered, “Good.”

That was all.

But his shoulders looked lighter.
