Chapter 18

Years passed.

Noah grew tall.

His fear changed shape.

At ten, he asked whether Vanessa killed his mother because of him.

I nearly broke.

“No,” I said. “She killed your mother because something was wrong in her. You were loved before she ever entered our lives.”

At twelve, he read parts of the court summary with Dr. Lane.

He cried.

Then got angry.

Then asked for pizza.

Grief is strange like that.

At fourteen, he spoke at a Truth Fund event.

Only two minutes.

His choice.

“When I was seven,” he said, “I thought adults believed whoever cried the prettiest. Vanessa cried pretty. I cried scared.”

The room went silent.

“My dad believes scared voices now.”

I cried in the back.

Elaine cried beside me.

Margaret held my hand.

Noah continued.

“If a kid says something feels wrong, don’t wait for proof. Help them get safe.”

Afterward, he asked if Laura would be proud.

“Yes,” I said.

“Even though I popped the fake belly?”

I laughed through tears.

“Especially because you popped the fake belly.”

He smiled.

May you like

A real one.

The kind Vanessa had tried to steal.
