Chapter 15

The verdict came after two days.

I stood between Margaret and Thomas.

Nora stood behind me.

Guilty.

Second-degree murder.

Guilty.

Evidence tampering.

Guilty.

Fraud.

Guilty.

Forgery.

Guilty.

Child emotional abuse.

Vanessa sat down hard.

Her mother screamed.

I closed my eyes.

Laura was still dead.

But the lie standing over her grave had finally fallen.

At sentencing, Margaret spoke first.

“You took my daughter and then tried to take her child’s future.”

Thomas spoke next.

His voice was quiet.

“You do not get to be remembered as Daniel’s fiancée. You will be remembered as the woman who murdered Laura and hurt Noah.”

Then I spoke.

“You studied our grief like a map,” I said. “You found every broken place and pressed your hands there.”

Vanessa looked at me.

“You told my son he would be sent away. You made him afraid of a baby that did not exist. You tried to make him feel responsible for your fake tragedy after making me live through a real one.”

My voice broke.

“But you failed. Noah told the truth. Laura’s life matters. And I will spend mine making sure our son never doubts that.”

Vanessa received a long sentence.

Long enough that Noah would grow up without her shadow at the window.

When I came home, Noah asked only one question.

“Did Mommy win?”

May you like

I knelt and pulled him close.

“Yes,” I whispered. “Mommy won.”
