Chapter 19

Vanessa appealed twice.

Lost twice.

Marvin lost his law license and served time for fraud and conspiracy.

The bakery settled with Laura’s estate after admitting safety failures at the retreat.

The hospital tightened record access because Vanessa had abused theirs.

Justice spread in boring documents.

Policies.

Checks.

Training modules.

I learned to love boring.

Boring meant fewer children crying in living rooms.

Noah became interested in law.

Then psychology.

Then filmmaking.

“Evidence and feelings,” he said.

“That’s a lot.”

“So am I.”

He was.

At seventeen, he made a short film for school.

It did not show Vanessa.

It did not show the fake belly.

It showed a little boy standing in a room full of adults, holding up a phone while everyone finally turned to listen.

He titled it Believe Me Before The Video.

It won a state award.

At the ceremony, he looked at me from the stage.

I saw the seven-year-old with the needle.

May you like

Then the young man with steady hands.

I stood and applauded until my palms hurt.
