Chapter 21 - The Gate at Midnight

Without exchanging a single word, Ethan and I moved with military precision. Ethan drew his automatic pistol, checking the chamber with a sharp click, while I grabbed my compact firearm from the desk drawer.
"Marcus, Leo!" Ethan shouted into his tactical radio as we bolted down the grand staircase. "All teams converge on the front security gates immediately! We have an active package drop!"
By the time we hit the massive iron gates at the end of the quarter-mile cobblestone driveway, Marcus and six heavily armed enforcers had already formed a defensive perimeter around a sleek, black metallic box resting on the stone pillar.
Ethan raised his hand, signaling the men to hold their positions. He stepped forward cautiously, using the barrel of his gun to flip open the unlocked lid of the metal box.
Inside sat an old, encrypted military-grade laptop, its screen glowing with a single blinking red prompt. Beside the laptop lay a pristine silver locket—the exact piece of jewelry Elena Caldwell had been wearing on the day of her death.
I stepped up beside Ethan, my breath catching in my throat as I stared at the silver locket. "Ethan... that's hers."
Ethan reached out with a trembling hand, picking up the locket and pressing the small catch. It popped open, revealing a miniature photograph of a younger Ethan and Elena smiling on their wedding day. But taped to the opposite inner flap was a micro-SD card.
"It's a trap," Marcus warned, keeping his rifle trained on the dark tree line beyond the gates. "It could be rigged with a remote thermal charge."
"It's not a bomb," Ethan said coldly, his eyes burning with lethal intent. He pulled the micro-SD card out of the locket and handed it directly to me. "Clara. Take this back to the study and plug it into our isolated diagnostic terminal. Let's see what our new friends want us to see."
Fifteen minutes later, we were back inside the reinforced master study. The heavy door was locked, and the room's digital sweepers were running at maximum frequency to ensure no audio bugs were active.
I sat at the mahogany desk, inserting the micro-SD card into an offline laptop disconnected from the internet. A single video file populated the desktop directory, labeled simply: TRUTH.MP4.
"Play it," Ethan ordered, standing directly behind my chair, his hand resting reassuringly on my shoulder.
I clicked play.
The screen flickered, illuminating the dark room with the blue-white light of a digital recording. The video showed a dimly lit underground chamber—not unlike the East Wing bunker beneath our own home. Sitting in a leather chair facing the camera was an elderly man with silver hair combed straight back, wearing an expensive silk robe bearing the crest of a double-headed serpent.
"If you are watching this, Ethan, it means you have dismantled my idiot cousins Victor and Julian," the old man spoke. His voice lacked the digital distortion of the masked man; it was smooth, cultured, and dripping with ancient malice. "Allow me to introduce myself. I am Alistair Vance, the true patriarch of the Black Shield."
Ethan let out a low, dangerous growl. "Alistair... the shipping commissioner who disappeared to Europe twenty-five years ago. Everyone thought he died of a stroke in Zurich."
"I never left, Ethan," Alistair smiled smoothly on the screen. "I simply allowed you and Don Carmine to play at running your little syndicates while my corporation absorbed the profitable percentages of every cargo ship entering the Eastern Seaboard. But you had to bring Clara into your life. You had to start fixing what was meant to stay broken."
The video cut to a secondary camera angle. The screen shifted to show a high-definition satellite map of New York Harbor, zooming in rapidly on a specific underground water-treatment facility located directly beneath the city's financial district.
"Elena didn't die because of a random cartel hit, Ethan," Alistair continued, his smile turning razor-thin. "She died because she discovered that our syndicate was utilizing the Caldwell shipping lines to import contraband materials. She threatened to go to the federal authorities. So, I gave the order. And now... history is about to repeat itself."
The video zoomed in further on a digital countdown clock pulsing in the corner of the map.

"You have exactly five hours to find the primary server relay hidden inside our municipal water facility," Alistair's voice echoed as the recording reached its climax. "Or a localized chemical dispersion will contaminate the primary water supply of Manhattan, framing your logistics network for mass murder. Choose wisely, Caldwell. Save the city, or save your family."
The screen went black.
