Chapter 12 - The Race Against Time

"Marcus, take the back stairs! Blow the secondary doors if you have to!" Ethan ordered, his voice cracking with panic as he sprinted out of the bunker, abandoning all tactical caution for the raw, desperate instinct of a father whose child was in the crosshairs.
"I'm right behind you!" I yelled, keeping pace with him despite the heavy tactical boots and my restrictive clothing.
We cleared the concrete stairs of the East Wing, bursting into the main hallway of the mansion. The house was dead silent. The amber chandeliers cast a warm, mocking glow over the expensive Persian rugs and polished banisters.
We hit the second-floor landing and raced down the corridor toward Noah’s bedroom. The door was slightly ajar.
Ethan didn't hesitate. He kicked the heavy oak door open with a brutal snap, raising his weapon as he surged into the room.
"Noah!" Ethan screamed.
The room was bathed in the soft, blue light of a night-light. In the center of the room, seven-year-old Noah was sitting up in bed, rubbing his eyes sleepily, looking confused and entirely unharmed.
"Dad? Miss Clara?" Noah blinked, his voice thick with sleep. "Why are you yelling? Did I miss breakfast?"
Ethan dropped his gun, rushing to the side of the bed. He threw his arms around Noah, pulling the boy so tight against his chest that Noah let out a soft grunt.
"You're okay," Ethan choked out, pressing desperate kisses into his son's hair. "You're safe, buddy. Dad's here."
I scanned the room frantically, checking the medical monitors, the IV stand, and the open balcony doors leading out to the terrace. The sheer curtains were billowing gently in the midnight breeze.
"Ethan," I called out, walking quickly toward the terrace. "Look at the IV line."
Ethan set Noah down gently, standing up and joining me by the bed. He inspected the clear plastic tubing connecting the IV bag to Noah's arm.
Attached to the line was a tiny, high-tech wireless bypass valve—a remote-controlled micro-syringe designed to inject air into the bloodstream upon a digital command. It had been installed with surgical precision, completely undetectable to a casual glance.
Beside the IV pole lay a small, discarded piece of paper with a handwritten address scribbled in bold black ink: Pier 44, Warehouse B. Come alone.
Ethan picked up the note, his jaw tightening until the paper crumpled in his fist. "The live feed was a decoy. They knew we'd rush upstairs, giving them time to slip away."
"And they want you at Pier 44," I said, my heart pounding against my ribs. "Ethan, it's a trap. If you go down there alone, they'll execute you and take the entire network."
"I don't have a choice, Clara," Ethan said, turning to look at me, his eyes dark, resolute, and filled with a terrifying, sacrificial calm. "If I stay here, they'll find another way to get to Noah. I have to cut the head off this snake tonight, once and for all."
"You're not going alone," I said firmly, stepping right up to him.
Ethan grabbed my shoulders, his grip tight and urgent. "Clara, listen to me. The Black Shield is professional-grade wet-work. This isn't like fighting Victor Vance or Margaret Hargrove. These men are ghosts. I won't risk your life."
"You think you can stop me from coming with you?" I challenged, staring right back into his fierce eyes. "I didn't pull your son out of a wheelchair just to watch you walk into a firing squad by yourself, Ethan Caldwell. We go together, or you have to tie me to this bed."
A heavy silence hung between us. For a second, Ethan looked like he might argue, but then a sharp, breathless laugh escaped his lips. He pulled me hard against his chest, wrapping his arms around me in a crushing embrace.
"Stubborn woman," Ethan whispered against my hair. "God help me, I love you."

He pulled back, turning to Marcus, who had just rushed into the room with his tactical team.
"Marcus, secure this entire floor. Put four men inside Noah's room and do not open this door for anyone except me or Clara," Ethan ordered, his mob-boss authority returning in full force. "If we aren't back by sunrise... burn the Black Shield to the ground."
