Chapter 17 - Chapter 17 - The Final Hearing The Federal District Court of Southern New York was packed to capacity. Journalists, federal prosecutors, and high-ranking law enforcement officials filled the oak-paneled gallery to witness the final legal dismantling of the Black Shield syndicate.

Inside the defendant's box sat Julian Vance, wearing an orange jumpsuit, his head bowed in absolute defeat as federal judges systematically read off sixty-four separate indictments ranging from racketeering and international conspiracy to corporate extortion.
From the front row of the gallery, Ethan and I watched quietly, our hands locked together. Noah was sitting between us, swinging his legs happily, holding a small handheld video game console.
"All rise for the Honorable Judge Henderson," the bailiff announced in a booming voice.
The judge took his seat, adjusting his glasses before looking down at the broken man standing before the bench.
"Julian Vance," Judge Henderson spoke, his voice echoing through the solemn courtroom. "You have systematically attempted to subvert the laws of this country, orchestrated corporate terrorism, and endangered innocent lives, including a child. This court finds you guilty on all counts. I sentence you to consecutive life terms in the federal penitentiary at ADX Florence, with zero possibility of parole."
The gavel came down with a sharp, echoing crack that signaled the definitive end of the Vance family's reign of terror.
As federal marshals stepped forward to shackle Julian and lead him away, Julian briefly turned his head toward the gallery. His hollow, bloodshot eyes locked onto mine for a fraction of a second, filled with bitter, impotent hatred.
I didn't flinch. I didn't look away. I simply squeezed Ethan's hand tighter and lifted my chin.

"Let's go home," Ethan whispered softly in my ear as the courtroom began to empty out.
"Let's go home," I agreed, a peaceful smile touching my lips.
