Chapter 16 - Chapter 16 - Whispers in the Dark Back at the Caldwell mansion, the quiet serenity of the evening contrasted sharply with the tactical updates flashing across Ethan’s private security monitors.

I sat at the mahogany dining table, helping Noah with his evening reading homework while the warm glow of the chandelier illuminated the room. Ethan stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, his phone pressed to his ear as Marcus delivered the final sit-rep from the Atlantic intercept operation.

"Secure him in a federal holding cell with zero communication privileges," Ethan instructed coldly into the phone. "Make sure the D.A. has the physical evidence package ready for morning arraignment. Good work, Marcus."

Ethan ended the call and walked over to the table, his hard expression melting the moment he looked down at his son. He pulled out a chair and sat beside Noah, ruffling the boy's dark hair.

"How's the reading coming along, buddy?" Ethan asked softly.

"I finished the whole chapter, Dad!" Noah beamed proudly, holding up his storybook. "Miss Clara said I didn't stumble on a single big word."

"That's my boy," Ethan smiled, wrapping an arm around Noah's shoulders before glancing over at me. His gray eyes softened with a warmth that only I ever got to see. "It's getting late, champion. Time to brush your teeth and get into bed. Mom and I need to talk about adult things."

"Okay! Goodnight, Dad. Goodnight, Mom," Noah chirped, scrambling off his chair and running down the hallway toward his bedroom.

I watched him go with a quiet, glowing smile. Hearing Noah call me "Mom" still sent a breathtaking ripple of joy straight to my heart.

Once his footsteps faded away, Ethan turned his full attention toward me. He reached across the table, taking my hand and gently rubbing his thumb over my knuckles.

"Julian is locked away," Ethan said quietly. "The last remnants of the Black Shield have been neutralized. For the first time in three years, Clara... there are no hidden threats waiting around the corner."

I squeezed his hand, letting out a long breath I felt like I'd been holding since the day I first walked onto this estate. "It feels surreal. Like we can finally just... breathe."

"Almost," Ethan murmured, a mysterious glint flashing in his dark eyes. He reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a small, flat velvet box.

My breath hitched. "Ethan? What's this?"

"Open it," he whispered.

I lifted the lid. Resting inside the velvet lining wasn't a ring—we already had those. It was a set of legal adoption papers, filled out, notarized, and signed in bold, decisive handwriting at the bottom.

Legal Guardian and Adoptive Parent: Clara Lynne Caldwell.

Tears instantly welled in my eyes. I looked up at him, my voice cracking. "Ethan... you... you did this?"

May you like

"I wanted to make it official," Ethan said, his voice thick with emotion. "You saved his life, Clara. You gave him his legs back, you gave him a mother's love, and you saved my sanity. I want the world to know what you already mean to us."

I threw my arms around his neck, burying my face in his shoulder as happy tears streamed down my cheeks. "Yes," I sobbed softly. "Yes, a million times yes."
