Chapter 2

I did not question Evelyn in the bridal suite.

That room had already taken enough from her.

I moved her to the east guest wing and brought the family physician through a private entrance.

Dehydration.

Malnutrition.

Bruising in different stages of healing.

Nothing immediately life-threatening.

I hated how grateful that made me.

Three years of believing someone dead or gone lowers the standard for relief until breathing feels like victory.

When the doctor finished, Evelyn asked for the door open.

I left it open.

Then she asked me not to let Bianca near her.

I posted two guards.

Only mine.

That distinction mattered now.

I sat across from her.

For a long time, neither of us spoke.

Three years earlier, I had stood in a chapel waiting.

Flowers.

Guests.

Capos.

My father’s ring in my pocket.

No bride.

Bianca found me first.

She carried Evelyn’s handwritten note.

I’m sorry. I can’t do this. Don’t follow me.

I read it until the words stopped meaning anything.

“You wrote the note.”

Evelyn looked at me.

“Yes.”

My chest tightened.

“Why?”

Her eyes lowered.

“Because Bianca had Ethan.”

I froze.

“Ethan?”

“He was a baby.”

My son had been only months old then.

His mother had died shortly after childbirth. Evelyn had entered my life before that tragedy and later became the woman helping me raise him.

She loved him.

I knew that.

Or thought I knew.

“What did Bianca do?”

“She brought him to the room under the bridal suite.”

My breathing slowed.

“She told me if I didn’t write exactly what she dictated, she would send him away somewhere you’d never find him.”

I stood so quickly the chair scraped backward.

Evelyn flinched.

I stopped.

Immediately.

Not her fear.

Never again.

I sat back down.

“Did she hurt him?”

“No.”

She swallowed.

“She didn’t need to.”

Of course.

Threats work best when the victim already knows the speaker has access.

Ethan had been the leverage.

May you like

The note had been the cage.

And I had trusted Bianca because she arrived carrying both.
