Chapter 13

Evelyn did not forgive me.
Good.
Not yet.
Maybe never entirely.
She asked one question that mattered more than the rest.
“Why did you believe the note?”
I had thought about it for three years.
Not enough.
“Because I was angry.”
She waited.
“I thought you had humiliated me.”
Her eyes hardened.
Yes.
There.
Pride.
Not evidence.
I believed abandonment because it injured my ego in a way I already feared.
A bride leaving a Mafia boss publicly?
Perfect wound.
Bianca knew.
Damian knew.
Matteo knew.
They chose the lie that matched my insecurity.
“I should have looked.”
Evelyn laughed without humor.
“You searched.”
“I searched outside.”
Exactly.
Airports.
Hotels.
Friends.
Old apartments.
I never searched my own floor.
Why would I?
Because the story already told me she left.
Narrative controls geography.
If someone tells you the person ran, every search begins outward.
No one looks down.
“I failed you.”
She stared.
“You were deceived.”
“Both can be true.”
That softened something.
Not enough.
Fine.
“I don’t need you to punish yourself forever.”
“I know.”
“Do you?”
I thought.
“No.”
Honest.
Better.
She leaned back.
“Then learn.”
That was all.
No kiss.
No reunion.
No promise.
Just instruction.
I had spent three years imagining what I would say if Evelyn returned.
Nothing I imagined survived reality.
She did not need declarations.
She needed consistency.
Doors that stayed open.
Questions answered.
Choices respected.

Slow work.
Harder than revenge.
