Chapter 15

Bianca asked to speak to Evelyn.
I said no.
Evelyn said yes.
Her decision.
They met with Anna present.
Not me.
When Evelyn returned, she looked exhausted.
“What happened?”
“She apologized.”
I waited.
“And?”
“She explained.”
Of course.
Bianca talked about our mother dying.
About raising me.
About fear of losing family.
About Matteo’s pressure.
About believing she could undo everything later.
Evelyn listened.
Then asked:
“Did any of that stop you opening the door?”
Bianca could not answer.
That was the center.
Motives matter.
Choices still exist.
“What did you tell her?”
Evelyn sat down.
“That I believe she loved you.”
I stared.
“And?”
“That it makes what she did sadder, not smaller.”
Perfect.
Bianca asked for forgiveness.
Evelyn did not give it.
She did not refuse forever either.
Simply:
“Not today.”
That was more generous than Bianca deserved.
Also entirely Evelyn’s choice.
I learned something watching from outside all of it.
Powerful men like final states.
Enemy.
Ally.
Forgiven.
Punished.
Resolved.
Women who survived my family kept teaching me that some things remain open.

Not because people are indecisive.
Because closure can be another demand.
