Chapter 16

Six months later, Evelyn moved into the west suite.

Not mine.

Closer.

That mattered.

We ate dinner together sometimes.

With Ethan.

Sometimes without.

She started working with the household foundation.

Not because I gave her a role.

Because she wanted one.

Specifically staff protections.

Anonymous reporting.

Direct access channels.

Rules against verbal orders carrying my authority unless confirmed.

Anna helped design them.

That felt right.

The house changed.

Staff spoke more.

Annoying.

Useful.

I learned how much everyone used to avoid telling me.

Kitchen shortages.

Security arrogance.

Bianca’s temper.

Damian’s habit of overriding schedules.

Nothing dramatic alone.

Together, culture.

Evelyn looked at me one night.

“You know why nobody told you?”

“Because they were scared.”

“Yes.”

I nodded.

“I thought fear kept order.”

“It keeps silence.”

That stayed with me.

Different.

I wanted obedience because it looked efficient.

People gave me silence instead.

Bianca and Damian built an entire prison inside that silence.

I could blame them.

I did.

I also changed the house.

That was my part.
