Chapter 5

By sunrise, the story was everywhere.
Heiress Injured During Incident at Whitmore Estate.
Incident.
That word made me sick.
Not attempted murder.
Not torture.
Incident.
The Whitmores had already hired a crisis team.
Beatrice released a statement asking for privacy during “Clara’s mental health episode.”
Vivian posted a black square online.
Grant told reporters I had been drinking.
Malcolm claimed I had threatened to ruin the family.
Peter disappeared.
Charles said nothing.
That worried Elias most.
“Charles is dangerous when quiet,” he told me.
I sat in his private car outside the hospital, wearing borrowed clothes and bandages around my hands.
Adrian sat in another car behind us.
I refused to ride with him.
Elias noticed but did not comment.
“Where are we going?” I asked.
“To the trust office.”
“I don’t know how to run a trust.”
“You don’t need to know everything today.”
“What do I need to know?”
Elias looked at me.
“That your signature can remove Charles Whitmore from three boards by noon.”
My breath caught.
“And if I sign?”
“He loses access to money he has treated as his birthright.”
I looked out the window.
“Good.”
At the office, lawyers waited around a long table.
So did a woman named Nora Bell, the trust director.
She looked at my bandaged hands and did not ask stupid questions.
She simply placed documents before me.
“These are emergency governance actions.”
“What do they do?”
“They freeze Whitmore-controlled accounts linked to the trust. Suspend voting proxies. Trigger forensic audits. Preserve estate footage. And notify insurers.”
Elias sat beside me.
“You can wait.”
I picked up the pen.
“No.”
My hands hurt as I signed.
Every signature felt like pulling a nail from my own coffin.
At 11:43 a.m., Charles Whitmore called.
Nora put him on speaker.
His voice filled the room.
“Clara, listen carefully. You are confused. Elias is using you.”
I stared at the phone.
“Like you used a hose?”
Silence.
Then his voice dropped.
“You have no idea what your father did.”
“No,” I said.
“But I’m learning what you did.”
Charles breathed once.
Hard.
“You should have drowned quietly.”
The room froze.
Elias slowly lifted his eyes to Nora.
“Recorded?”
May you like
Nora smiled coldly.
“Every word.”
