Chapter 15

The criminal trial lasted six weeks.

The footage of the glass case played on the third day.

I watched the jury watch me drown.

Their faces changed.

Some looked away.

One juror cried.

I did not.

Not then.

I sat straight, hands folded, my father’s ring on a chain beneath my blouse.

Charles refused to look at the screen.

Beatrice stared at it with dry eyes.

Grant shook.

Vivian sobbed loudly until the judge warned her.

Peter took a plea and testified.

He admitted they planned to scare me into signing trust documents.

He admitted Charles said fear would make me obedient.

He admitted the water was supposed to stop before it reached my face.

Then the prosecutor asked, “Who was assigned to stop it?”

Peter lowered his head.

“No one.”

That sentence filled the courtroom.

No one.

No one had planned to save me.

Adrian testified again.

This time, for the prosecution.

Charles looked at his son with hatred.

Adrian said, “My family taught me loyalty meant silence. Clara taught me silence is where cruelty survives.”

I looked down.

Because I still loved him.

Because I still did not know if love was enough.

When I testified, Charles’s attorney asked why I married into a family that disliked me.

I answered, “Because I thought love could make me strong enough to endure being disliked.”

“And were you wrong?”

I looked at Adrian.

Then at Elias.

Then at my mother.

Then at the jury.

May you like

“Yes,” I said.

“Love should never require endurance of cruelty.”
