Chapter 16

The verdict came on a rainy Friday.
Charles Whitmore was found guilty.
Attempted murder.
Fraud.
Conspiracy.
And second-degree murder in my father’s death.
Beatrice was found guilty of attempted murder and conspiracy.
Grant, Malcolm, Vivian, and Peter received convictions or plea sentences.
The Whitmore empire cracked open in public.
Not with elegance.
With handcuffs.
Charles did not shout when the verdict came.
He looked at me.
For the first time, there was no performance.
Only hatred.
“You think this gives you back your father?”
The judge ordered him silent.
I answered anyway.
“No.”
My voice carried.
“But it gives him back his name.”
Sentencing came later.
Prison terms.
Asset forfeitures.
Civil penalties.
The trust recovered controlling assets.
Whitmore Holdings was placed under independent management.
Their grand estate was seized pending restitution.
The glass case was removed as evidence.
I never wanted to see it again.
Afterward, I walked outside into the rain.
Adrian followed, stopping a few feet behind me.
“It’s over,” he said.
I looked up at the gray sky.
“No.”
He nodded.
“I know. Not that kind of over.”
I turned.
“I need time away from you.”
Pain crossed his face, but he did not argue.
“How long?”
“I don’t know.”
He swallowed.
“Okay.”
That okay mattered.

He had spent his life inside a family that grabbed what it wanted.
Letting me step away was the first proof he understood love differently now.
