Chapter 4

Adrian did not deny it.

That hurt worse than a lie.

He sat beside my hospital bed and lowered his head.

“I knew there was history.”

“History?”

My voice cracked.

“Your family locked me in a glass case and filled it with water.”

His hands trembled.

“I didn’t know they would do this.”

“But you knew enough to call Elias instead of the police.”

He looked at Elias.

Then back at me.

“My father has influence. Police could have been delayed.”

I stared at him.

“How many times have you protected me without telling me what I needed protection from?”

Adrian closed his eyes.

“Too many.”

The letter burned in my lap.

I opened it.

My father’s words blurred through tears.

Clara,

If you are reading this, Charles Whitmore has stopped hiding his hunger.

He took my company.

He took my reputation.

He tried to take my life.

If I am gone, he will one day come for what I placed beyond his reach.

The Thorne Trust belongs to you.

Not Elias.

Not the Whitmores.

You.

My hands went numb.

“The Thorne Trust?”

Elias said, “Your father created it with me. It holds land, mineral rights, patents, and controlling interests in several companies.”

Adrian whispered, “Including Whitmore Holdings.”

I turned to him slowly.

“What?”

He swallowed.

“My family doesn’t control their empire. Not completely.”

Elias stepped closer.

“Your father did.”

The room went silent.

Everything shifted.

The dinners where Beatrice insulted my cheap dress.

The way Charles studied me like a locked door.

The way Vivian called me a stray.

They had not hated me because I had nothing.

They hated me because I unknowingly had everything they wanted.

I looked at Adrian.

“Did you marry me because of it?”

Pain crossed his face.

“No.”

“Did your family push you toward me?”

“Yes.”

My chest tightened.

He reached for my hand.

I pulled away.

“Don’t.”

He froze.

Elias said quietly, “Clara, the police need your formal statement. And after that, we move fast.”

“Fast?”

He nodded.

“By morning, the Whitmores will try to paint you as unstable.”

I laughed bitterly.

“They already started.”

May you like

“Yes,” Elias said.

“So we strike first.”
