Chapter 7 - NORA IN THE GLASS HOUSE

Emily found Nora.

Not Alexander.

Not security.

Emily.

She noticed Lily staring repeatedly through the breakfast-room window toward the abandoned glass greenhouse at the edge of the property.

“What’s wrong?”

Lily whispered, “Aunt Nora likes yellow flowers.”

The greenhouse had once belonged to Alexander’s mother.

Nobody used it now.

Alexander ordered it searched.

The front door was locked from the outside.

Inside, behind stacks of gardening crates, they found Nora Shaw.

Alive.

Weak.

Bruised.

But alive.

Lily ran to her.

Nora dropped to her knees despite the pain.

“You stayed hidden.”

Lily hugged her.

“Emily fed me.”

Nora looked toward Alexander’s daughter.

“Thank you.”

Alexander waited until a physician treated Nora before asking questions.

“Who locked you in there?”

“Daniel.”

Daniel Cross was still in police custody.

Nora explained.

He intercepted her on the night she brought Lily into the mansion.

Richard had ordered Daniel to find out what evidence Nora carried.

Daniel wanted the payment.

He also wanted to protect himself.

For years, he had quietly sold mansion schedules and security information to Richard.

If Nora exposed the tunnel operation, his side business would surface too.

“He took me,” Nora said. “But he couldn’t find Lily.”

“So Daniel locked you here?”

“Yes.”

“What about Richard?”

Nora looked toward the windows.

“He came because I called him.”

Alexander frowned.

“You trusted him?”

“No.”

“Then why?”

“Because Theodore told me Richard knew who paid the hospital.”

Another event changed meaning.

Richard had followed Nora onto the estate because Nora summoned him.

That did not clear him.

It changed why he was there.

Nora had proof.

Theodore’s final voice recorder.

She had hidden it beneath the greenhouse floor.

Alexander recovered it.

Theodore’s voice filled the glass room.

“Richard, if you are hearing this, you already know I traced the maternity payment.”

Nora looked at Alexander.

“Theodore made it for him.”

The recording continued.

“You allowed Vale Legacy to be used as a pass-through. Whether you knew before or after does not matter. You protected the sender.”

Richard had not necessarily ordered the original abduction.

But he had covered it up.

Why?

Theodore answered.

“You wanted the Foundation shares. They wanted the child.”

Different motives.

Richard discovered someone was trying to remove Baby B.

Instead of exposing them, he allowed the operation to proceed because Lily’s disappearance financially benefited his foundation.

Then Theodore interfered and took Lily himself.

Nora produced another hard clue.

A cancelled check from Richard’s private account to the hospital registrar three days after the birth.

Memo:

CONFIDENTIAL RECORD CORRECTION.

Richard had personally paid to preserve the false death entry after Theodore removed Lily.

Alexander felt sick.

His godfather had known his daughter was alive.

And chose silence because silence preserved control.

Then the greenhouse doors shattered.

Private security men entered.

Not Alexander’s.

Richard walked behind them.

He carried a court order.

“You’ve hidden a child involved in active trust litigation.”

Alexander stepped between Richard and Lily.

“She’s my daughter.”

“Then prove it in court.”

“We have DNA.”

Richard smiled.

“No. You have a private test arranged by you.”

He produced another report.

Independent laboratory.

Lily Cole.

Sarah Cole.

MATERNAL RELATIONSHIP EXCLUDED.

Sarah went white.

“That’s false.”

Richard looked toward Nora.

“This woman has lied for six years.”

Nora lunged toward him.

“You paid them!”

Richard stepped back.

One of his guards seized the recorder.

Alexander hit him before he could leave.

The greenhouse erupted.

Security collided.

Glass shattered.

Sarah pulled the children behind a stone planter.

Richard grabbed Theodore’s recorder from the floor.

Nora caught his sleeve.

He shoved her.

Alexander tackled him against a table.

The recorder slid across broken glass.

Emily reached it first.

“Dad!”

Alexander took it.

Police arrived seconds later.

Richard’s court order did not authorize violence or evidence seizure.

His guards were detained.

Richard himself remained legally free.

For now.

Before leaving, he looked at Alexander.

“You think Theodore was protecting Lily from me.”

“He was.”

Richard shook his head.

“He was protecting her from people he was more afraid of than me.”

Alexander held up the recording.

“Who?”

For the first time, Richard’s arrogance disappeared.

“Theodore found out who Morrow Biomedical really worked for.”

Sarah stepped closer.

“Who?”

Richard looked directly at her.

“Ask Dr. Celia Ward.”

Sarah stopped.

Dr. Ward had delivered Emily.

And Lily.

Richard’s final words landed harder.

“She was the one who told us there were two babies before either of them was born.”
