Chapter 5 - THE GIRL THEY CAME BACK FOR

Emily screamed from upstairs.
Alexander ran before anyone else moved.
The medical-suite door was open.
The independent guard lay unconscious in the hallway.
Sarah reached the room behind Alexander.
Lily was gone.
The wall panel stood open.
Emily was crouched beside it.
“He took her!”
“Who?”
“A man in the wall.”
Alexander entered the passage.
Fresh footprints marked the dust.
He followed them through the service corridor and down toward the old laundry wing.
Ahead, Lily cried.
Alexander ran faster.
A man emerged carrying her beneath one arm.
Curtis Vane.
The estate’s senior maintenance supervisor.
He had worked at the mansion for eleven years.
Long enough to know every hidden corridor.
“Put her down.”
Curtis pulled Lily closer.
“She has something that doesn’t belong to her.”
“She’s six.”
“I don’t want to hurt her.”
“Then let her go.”
Curtis backed toward the exterior service door.
Alexander moved.
Curtis shoved Lily aside and swung a heavy wrench.
Alexander blocked it with his forearm.
They hit the wall.
Sarah pulled Lily away.
Curtis tried to escape.
Alexander tackled him before he reached the door.
Police found a prepaid phone inside his pocket.
The newest instruction:
GET THE LOCKET. THE GIRL IS SECONDARY.
Alexander looked toward Lily.
“What locket?”
Lily touched her dress.
Nothing.
Then she remembered.
“I hid it.”
“Where?”
“In the wall.”
They returned to the original vent.
Emily knew exactly where Lily meant.
Behind the blanket was a tiny silver locket wrapped in cloth.
Inside was no photograph.
A microSD card had been taped beneath the backing.
Nora had hidden data with Lily.
The card contained three videos.
The first had been recorded six years earlier.
Theodore Cole sat inside a car.
Nora held a newborn beside him.
Baby Lily.
Theodore looked directly into the camera.
“If Alexander ever sees this, then I failed to finish what I started.”
Alexander stopped breathing.
Theodore continued.
“Richard Vale obtained the hospital’s multiple-birth notice before Sarah entered surgery.”
Sarah covered her mouth.
“He knew there were twins?”
“Yes.”
Theodore explained that the Cole Founder Trust had a provision Richard understood better than Alexander.
Two living Cole descendants would divide the founder block.
If both were certified before age seven, the Legacy Foundation would lose sixteen percent permanently.
Richard’s voting control would collapse.
“He wanted one child absent from the record,” Theodore said.
Alexander’s anger hardened.
Then Theodore surprised them.
“But Richard is not the reason I removed Lily.”
Alexander leaned toward the screen.
“I intercepted a payment to a maternity administrator from someone using Vale’s corporate network.”
Richard’s network.
Not necessarily Richard.
“The instruction was not to falsify a trust document.”
Theodore looked frightened.
“It was to transfer Baby B before sunrise.”
Sarah whispered, “Transfer where?”
Theodore continued.
“I took her first.”
There it was.
The event from the hospital video changed meaning again.
Theodore had falsified the death record.
He had used Alexander’s credentials.
He had secretly removed his granddaughter.
Those facts remained.
But the motive was no longer simple theft.
He believed he was interrupting another operation.
The second video showed Nora in a small house three months earlier.
Lily played in the background.
Nora spoke quietly.
“Theodore promised this would last one year.”
Alexander turned toward Sarah.
One year.
Not six.
Nora continued.
“He died before he could bring her home.”
After Theodore’s death, Nora attempted to contact Alexander twice.
Both times people found her first.
Her apartment was searched.
Her bank account was frozen.
Someone sent photographs of Emily outside school.
Threats.
Keep Lily hidden or the known child becomes vulnerable.
Nora disappeared again.
She had been running ever since.
The third video had been recorded five days ago.
“I cannot wait anymore. The trust deadline is Monday.”
Nora looked directly into the camera.
“I’m taking Lily to the mansion. Theodore built a passage into the east wing for emergencies. Emily is the only person I believe no one is watching closely.”
Emily looked stunned.
Nora had chosen her intentionally.
Then she said:
“If I disappear, do not assume Richard has me.”
Alexander frowned.
“Why?”
Nora answered from the recording.
“Richard wants the shares. Daniel wants money. But someone else has spent six years making sure Lily never reaches her parents.”
The video ended.
Curtis finally agreed to talk.
Richard had not hired him.
The payment came from a different source.
Evelyn Grant.
General counsel for the Cole Legacy Foundation.
The attorney who had administered Theodore’s estate after his death.
Then Sarah noticed the last file on the memory card.
A scan of Theodore’s private trust ledger.
At the bottom was one handwritten instruction.
If Lily is found before seven, do not let Evelyn certify her alone.
Alexander looked toward Sarah.
“Why?”
She scrolled lower.
May you like
Theodore had written one final sentence.
Because Evelyn knows what really happened to Nora’s first attempt to bring Lily home.
