Chapter 2 - THE SILVER KEY

Daniel Cross arrived in the family room as though nothing unusual had happened.

Alexander watched him enter.

Black suit.

Calm expression.

Silver service key attached to his belt.

Lily immediately hid behind Sarah.

Daniel saw her.

His step faltered.

Only once.

But Alexander caught it.

“Who is she?” Daniel asked.

Alexander did not answer.

Instead he placed the estate water bottle on the table.

“Your credential opened the east maintenance corridor at 9:14 this morning.”

“I inspected a ventilation complaint.”

“Who reported it?”

Daniel paused.

“Housekeeping.”

“Name.”

Another pause.

“I’d need to check.”

Alexander looked toward Lily.

“Have you seen him inside the wall?”

Lily shook her head.

Then pointed at the silver key.

“Aunt Nora had one like that.”

That changed the question.

The key itself might not belong only to Daniel.

Alexander removed Daniel’s credentials immediately but did not accuse him of kidnapping anyone.

He knew Daniel had accessed the corridor.

He suspected he knew more.

That was all.

Sarah brought Lily upstairs to the medical suite.

Emily refused to leave her.

While the physician examined Lily, Sarah searched old hospital records from Emily’s birth.

The official discharge file listed:

One live female birth.

No twin.

No second infant.

Then Sarah found the billing statement.

Two neonatal bassinets.

Two newborn blood screens.

Two umbilical-cord processing charges.

Her hands began trembling.

“Alexander.”

He read the page.

One billing error could happen.

Four matching charges were harder to dismiss.

Then the lights went out.

Lily screamed.

Emergency lamps came on.

A scraping sound came from behind the medical-room wall.

Alexander turned.

The panel beside the cabinet shifted.

Someone was inside the service passage.

He ran.

The panel opened three inches.

A gloved hand reached through.

Not toward Alexander.

Toward Lily.

Sarah pulled both girls behind her.

Alexander grabbed the wrist.

The intruder jerked backward.

The panel slammed shut.

Alexander tore it open and entered the passage.

Footsteps raced ahead.

He followed through darkness until the corridor split behind the library.

A metal door banged.

By the time Alexander reached the courtyard, whoever had been inside was gone.

One object remained on the floor.

A silver service key.

Daniel’s type.

But Daniel himself was still under guard in the downstairs office.

Sarah held it beneath the light.

“So it wasn’t him?”

Alexander shook his head.

“We don’t know that.”

He could have given someone a duplicate.

Or someone could have copied his.

The key alone proved neither innocence nor guilt.

Back upstairs, Lily finally spoke about Nora.

Nora Shaw had taken care of her “forever.”

They had lived in small rented houses.

Never long in one place.

Nora told Lily never to use her last name.

Four nights earlier, Nora brought her onto the Cole estate through an underground service entrance.

“She said she had to find proof.”

“What proof?” Alexander asked.

Lily shook her head.

“She put me in the wall and told me Emily would help.”

Emily looked surprised.

“She knew me?”

Lily nodded.

“She had pictures.”

Sarah’s face tightened.

Pictures of their daughter.

Someone had been watching Emily too.

Then Lily remembered one final instruction.

“If Aunt Nora didn’t come back after two sleeps, I had to find the bracelet.”

Alexander held up the hospital band.

“This?”

“No.”

Lily crawled toward the broken wall.

She reached beneath the blanket Alexander had found.

Her hand disappeared into a crack.

When she withdrew it, she was holding a second bracelet.

BABY GIRL COLE A.

Emily’s name had been handwritten beneath it.

Sarah sat down.

Two bracelets.

Same hospital.

Same date.

A and B.

Alexander ordered an emergency DNA test for Lily.

Before the physician could leave with the sample, Sarah’s laptop chimed.

She had requested the original hospital birth archive.

The server had found an old file excluded from the modern chart.

COLE, SARAH — MULTIPLE DELIVERY SUPPORT.

Alexander opened it.

Most pages had been deleted.

One remained.

INFANT B STATUS: DECEASED.

No time of death.

No physician signature.

No cause.

And beneath the unsigned form was an authorization code.

A.COLE-01.

Alexander’s personal digital credential.

May you like

Sarah slowly looked up at her husband.

“Why is your signature on the record saying the second baby died?”
