Chapter 10 - TWO DAUGHTERS AND ONE MISSING MOTHER

Alexander reached the mansion to find the east wall open again.
Sarah ran behind him.
“Emily!”
No answer.
Lily stood in the hallway crying.
“She went after the woman.”
“What woman?”
“A lady came out of the wall.”
Alexander entered the passage.
Sarah followed despite his order to remain outside.
Footprints led toward the abandoned servants’ staircase.
At the bottom, they found Emily.
Safe.
Standing beside a woman.
Mid-thirties.
Thin.
Dark blond hair.
Tears streaming down her face.
The woman held both hands where Alexander could see them.
“I’m not here to hurt her.”
Sarah stopped.
Something about the woman’s face was wrong.
Not frightening.
Familiar.
Emily had the same eyes.
The woman looked at Sarah.
“My name is Laura Mercer.”
Nobody moved.
Emily looked between the adults.
“Do you know her?”
Sarah’s heart broke.
“Yes.”
Then she corrected herself.
“No. But I know who she is.”
Laura did not ask Emily to call her mother.
She did not reach for her.
That mattered.
She only said:
“I’ve been trying to get inside this house for three days.”
Alexander looked toward the tunnel.
“You knew the passage?”
“Theodore showed me years ago.”
Another connection.
Laura told them what happened after the hospital.
Her father, Nathan Mercer, ran Morrow’s genetics program.
She became pregnant without his approval.
The father disappeared before the birth.
Nathan considered the baby an embarrassment and a liability.
When Sarah’s twin delivery occurred the same night, someone inside Morrow proposed a temporary switch.
Laura’s infant would occupy the Cole bassinet while Baby B was moved into the private program.
Afterward, Laura’s child would supposedly be returned.
Theodore discovered only part of the operation.
He removed Lily.
The hospital panicked.
Morrow erased records.
Nathan took Laura away before she could recover her baby.
“When I asked where she was, he told me she died.”
Emily moved closer to Sarah.
Laura saw it.
Pain crossed her face.
But she did not object.
“Why didn’t you come sooner?” Alexander asked.
“I learned she was alive six months ago.”
“From whom?”
“Nora.”
Everyone turned.
Nora had known more than she admitted.
Not everything.
But more.
Laura explained that Nora contacted her after Theodore’s death records were finally released from a sealed estate file.
Together they tried to reconstruct the hospital switch.
Nora returned Lily first because Lily’s trust deadline was immediate.
Laura planned to come after.
Then Daniel found Nora.
Richard discovered Lily.
The conspiracy reactivated.
Too many people had different reasons to keep the past buried.
By morning, police, trust attorneys, and independent investigators filled the mansion.
The first major battle was finally resolved.
The supervised DNA evidence certified Lily as Alexander and Sarah’s biological daughter.
Nora’s testimony established how Theodore removed her.
Theodore’s recording proved he intervened after discovering the planned transfer.
Richard’s payment to the hospital registrar established his role in preserving the false death record.
Daniel’s messages established his recent effort to locate Lily.
Evelyn admitted concealing Lily’s survival after Theodore died and surrendered the original trust documents.
Richard’s emergency injunction failed.
Two days before the seventh birthday deadline, Lily Cole was legally recognized.
The sixteen-percent founder block transferred out of the Legacy Foundation and into protected trust for Lily.
Richard lost control.
Daniel faced criminal charges.
Curtis cooperated.
Evelyn resigned and agreed to testify.
For the first time, Lily slept in a real bedroom inside her parents’ house.
Emily slept beside her.
Neither wanted the wall between them closed.
Partial payoff.
A child hidden for six years was no longer hidden.
But the family was not whole.
It had become larger.
And far more complicated.
Sarah met Laura alone in the breakfast room.
The bread plate still sat near the counter.
The same little plate Emily had used to feed Lily.
Laura looked toward the stairs.
“I’m not taking Emily away from you.”
Sarah’s eyes filled.
“You don’t know what you’ll want tomorrow.”
“No.”
Laura was honest.
“But today I know she has a mother.”
Sarah looked at her.
“She may have two.”
That was the closest either woman could come to an answer.
Alexander entered carrying the final independent hospital report.
“We found Nathan Mercer.”
Laura stood.
“Where?”
“He didn’t disappear.”
Alexander placed a corporate photograph on the table.
Nathan Mercer had changed his name seventeen years earlier.
He had spent years operating through private foundations.
Morrow was only one of them.
But that was not the part that frightened Alexander.
He opened the next page.
Nathan Mercer had served as a silent investor in Cole Technologies.
Since before Alexander became chief executive.
Sarah stared.
“He was inside your company?”
“Yes.”
“For how long?”
“Twenty-one years.”
Longer than Alexander’s marriage.
Longer than either child’s life.
Then the trust attorney entered.
“You need to see something.”
The recognition process required testing both Cole-designated newborn blood cards from the hospital archive.
Cole B matched Lily.
The other sample labeled Cole A did not match Emily.
They already knew that.
But it did match someone else in the national family-reference database.
Alexander looked at the result.
His face emptied.
Sarah stood.
“What?”
The sample identified as biological Baby A belonged to a living female child.
Not Emily.
Not Lily.
A third girl.
Born the same night.
Registered six years ago under another surname.
Laura whispered, “That’s impossible.”
Alexander turned the report around.
The child was listed as residing under guardianship of Nathan Mercer.
Sarah stared at him.
“If Lily is Baby B…”
Alexander looked upstairs, where Emily and Lily were laughing together for the first time.
Then back at the laboratory result.
“…then someone switched more than two babies that night.”
The mansion intercom suddenly chimed.
Front gate security.
A vehicle had arrived.
Alexander opened the camera feed.
An elderly man stepped from a black sedan.
Nathan Mercer.
Beside him stood a six-year-old girl in a white coat.
She looked directly into the camera.
Sarah stopped breathing.
May you like
Because the little girl had Alexander’s eyes.
And around her wrist was the original hospital bracelet marked BABY GIRL COLE A.
