CHAPTER 8 — THE MIDNIGHT PHONE CALL

That night, my phone rang.
It was my mother.
I didn't answer.
She called again.
Then again.
Finally, I picked up.
“You humiliated me.”
I remained silent.
“Do you know what people will say?”
“Let them.”
“I sacrificed my entire life for you.”
“I know.”
“I made you the man you are today.”
“And I am grateful.”
“Then why are you treating me like this?”
I looked at Hannah sleeping beside me.
I said:
“Because gratitude doesn't mean giving you permission to hurt other people.”
There was silence on the other end.
“You will regret this.”
“Maybe.”
I sighed.
“But I would rather regret protecting my wife than spend the rest of my life regretting that I didn't.”
My mother hung up.
May you like
