CHAPTER 6 — THE SENTENCE THAT DROVE MY MOTHER OUT

Evelyn crossed her arms.

“You're really going to throw your own mother out of this house because of her?”

I looked at her.

“This isn't about Hannah.”

She scoffed.

“Then what is it about?”

“Everything.”

The room fell silent.

I pointed toward the marble floor.

“It's because you humiliated my wife.”

“Because you hurt her.”

“Because you believe you have the right to control our lives.”

She laughed.

“I am your mother.”

“Yes.”

I nodded.

“And that's why I gave you far too many chances.”

She froze.

I turned toward the head butler.

“Pack my mother's belongings.”

Evelyn's eyes widened.

“Thomas!”

“Take her to a hotel.”

“You can't do this!”

I looked directly into her eyes.

“Yes, I can.”

“This is my family's house!”

I shook my head.

“No.”

I walked over to Hannah.

I placed my hand gently on her shoulder.

“This is my wife's home.”

Then I said the sentence I should have spoken three years earlier:

“I'm not throwing you out of my life because of Hannah. I'm throwing you out because I finally understand that someone who hurts my family cannot call herself its protector.”

Evelyn stood completely still.

I looked at her one last time.

May you like

“Take her away.”
