CHAPTER 3 — THE SECRET HIDDEN IN THE CAKE

Hannah finally broke down.

She buried her face against my shoulder.

“I just wanted to surprise you.”

“I know.”

“I woke up at five this morning.”

She sobbed.

“I made the cake for the first time.”

I closed my eyes.

“I know.”

“I also wanted to tell you something.”

I gently pulled away.

“What?”

Hannah placed her hand over her stomach.

She looked at me through tear-filled eyes.

“I got my results from the clinic this morning.”

My heart stopped.

“Is something wrong with you?”

She shook her head.

“No.”

“The baby?”

Hannah smiled weakly.

“The baby is healthy.”

I finally breathed again.

Then she said:

“I know the gender.”

I stared at her.

“Really?”

She nodded.

“I wanted to tell you with the cake.”

I looked down at the blue frosting covering the floor.

“Because...”

Hannah reached into the broken pieces.

She searched for something.

Then she pulled out a tiny object.

Two little baby shoes made of sugar.

Blue.

I stared at them.

“A boy.”

My voice broke.

“Our son.”

I didn't know what to say.

I simply pulled her into my arms.

Our son.

But then a voice came from behind me.

“Don't act as if this is some touching family moment.”

I slowly stood up.

Evelyn was standing too.

She looked directly at Hannah.

“She is only trying to use that child to trap you.”

I looked at my mother.

“Enough.”

May you like

It was the first time I had ever said that word to her.

But it wouldn't be the last.
