CHAPTER 12 — MY MOTHER CAME BACK

I didn't want to open it.
But Hannah said:
“You should read it.”
There was no apology.
No explanation.
Only one sentence:
“I want to see my grandson.”
I placed the letter down.
Hannah looked at me.
“You don't have to decide right now.”
I stayed silent for a long time.
Finally, I said:
“I'll give her one chance.”
Hannah looked surprised.
“Really?”
“Yes.”
“But not because she is my mother.”
I looked at her.
“Because I don't want Daniel to grow up carrying unnecessary hatred.”
We agreed to meet Evelyn at a restaurant.
She came alone.
No expensive jewelry.
No designer suit.
Just an older woman who looked exhausted.
She looked at Daniel.
Her eyes became wet.
“He looks like you.”
I replied:
“No.”
May you like
“He looks like Hannah.”
For once, my mother didn't argue.
