Chapter 6 - The Midnight Boardroom

Z

Alessandro pushed the double mahogany doors open with enough force that they struck the paneled walls, echoing like thunder through the boardroom.

The room instantly fell dead silent.

Twelve of Chicago’s most powerful corporate directors sat around a thirty-foot conference table made of polished Brazilian rosewood. At the head of the table stood Arthur Vance, his silver hair immaculate, his tailored suit screaming authority. Beside him sat Victoria, looking smug and composed, holding a sleek tablet in her manicured hands.

"Alessandro," Arthur said, recovering his composure with practiced ease. "You're late to your own removal hearing. Though I see you've brought your... diner guest along for the spectacle."

Victoria smirked, leaning back in her leather chair. "Did you bring her here to beg for a severance package, Alessandro? I told you earlier, the offer is off the table."

I didn't wait for Alessandro to speak. I walked straight down the center of the boardroom, the heels of my boots clicking rhythmically against the hardwood floor. I stopped directly across from Arthur Vance, lifted the heavy black leather binder, and slammed it down onto the polished rosewood table with a force that rattled their crystal water glasses.

"Judge Harold Sterling is dead," I announced, my voice carrying with absolute, unwavering clarity.

Victoria’s smirk vanished instantly. Arthur’s eyes widened, a flicker of raw terror breaking through his carefully constructed mask.

"What nonsense is this?" Arthur demanded, his voice cracking slightly. "Sterling is presiding over the federal district—"

"Sterling was shot an hour ago inside the sub-basement vault of the First National Bank," Alessandro said, stepping up beside me, his tall frame radiating pure menace. "After he tried to murder Elizabeth to retrieve the original 2016 wire fraud agreements."

The board members began murmuring in alarm, glancing between Arthur and the thick binder on the table.

"Look at page forty-two, gentlemen," I commanded, addressing the directors. "You’ll find the offshore shell accounts that Arthur Vance created under the Hart-Vitali umbrella. You'll also find the blackmail ledger signed by Arthur Vance, detailing the exact payments made to Daniel Mercer's private security firm three days before my parents' car was forced off the road."

One of the senior board members, an elderly man named George Sterling—the late judge's estranged cousin—reached across the table and pulled the binder toward himself. His hands trembled as he turned the brittle pages.

"My God, Arthur," George whispered, his face turning pale. "These are original federal wire logs. You used corporate pension funds to finance Mercer's operation."

"It's a forgery!" Victoria shrieked, standing up so fast her chair screeched against the floor. "She's a fraud! She lived under a fake identity for eight years! Security, remove her from this room immediately!"

"Nobody moves," Alessandro commanded, his voice dropping into a low, terrifying register that froze the two private guards standing near the doors. "The building is surrounded by federal agents from the Department of Justice. Marcus has already uploaded digital scans of that entire ledger to the Deputy Director’s personal terminal."

Arthur Vance slowly sank back down into his leather chair, the color completely drained from his face. The untouchable patriarch of Chicago society looked suddenly old, broken, and thoroughly defeated.

"You ruined everything, Vittorio," Arthur muttered under his breath, his eyes staring blankly at the mahogany table. "We could have owned this entire city."

"My father died because he refused to let you turn our family into criminals," Alessandro said coldly. "And you will spend the rest of your life in a supermax prison answering for his murder."

The boardroom doors opened once more. This time, six armed federal agents stepped inside, badges gleaming under the recessed lighting.

"Arthur Vance, Victoria Vance," the lead agent announced, stepping forward with handcuffs drawn. "You are under arrest for federal racketeering, conspiracy to commit murder, and obstruction of justice."

Victoria let out a furious scream as an agent grabbed her wrists, twisting them behind her back. "Do you know who my family is? You can't touch me! Alessandro, tell them! Tell them this is a lie!"

Alessandro didn't even look at her as the agents escorted father and daughter out of the boardroom in handcuffs. Their shouting faded down the long hallway until the penthouse floor was once again wrapped in profound silence.

Alessandro turned to the remaining board members. "This meeting is adjourned. Tomorrow morning at eight, my legal team will present the full restructuring plan that restores the Hart name as full equal partners in the Vitali Conglomerate."

The directors nodded wordlessly, gathering their tablets and files before quickly exiting the room, leaving Alessandro and me alone in the vast, glittering expanse of the boardroom.
