Chapter 16 - A Kingdom of Our Own

Ten months later, the early summer breeze off Lake Michigan carried the sweet fragrance of blooming white peonies and fresh lavender across the sprawling private estate in Lake Forest.
The manicured lawns stretched down toward the shimmering blue waters of the lake, where a grand white marquee was adorned with thousands of cascading orchids and fairy lights. Two hundred of our closest friends, colleagues, and dedicated medical staff sat on elegant white chairs, watching the sun dip toward the horizon in a blaze of gold and rose.
Inside the bridal suite of the historic manor, I stood before a full-length antique mirror, adjusting the delicate lace veil that cascaded over my ivory silk wedding gown. The dress was simple, elegant, and timeless, hugging my figure before flowing into a long, dramatic train. Around my neck hung my mother's restored sapphire pendant, glowing brilliantly against my skin.
A soft knock sounded at the door, and Liam walked in, looking impeccably handsome in a tailored black tuxedo with an orchid boutonnière.
"Well, Doctor Hart," Liam said, his eyes misting with emotion as he looked at me. "You clean up remarkably well for someone who used to spill maple syrup on her diner apron every morning."
I laughed, blinking back happy tears, and threw my arms around his neck. "I wouldn't be standing here without you, Liam. You gave me eight years of my life back. You saved me in that stairwell. You will always be my brother."
"And you will always be the most stubborn, incredible person I know," Liam whispered, kissing my cheek. He pulled back, offering me his arm with a proud smile. "Your father would have been the proudest man on earth today, Elizabeth. But since he's watching from above, it is my greatest honor to walk you down that aisle."
The music began—a soft, breathtaking arrangement of cellos and violins playing the melody Alessandro and I had listened to in room 1520 on the night our lives changed forever.
The heavy double doors of the manor opened onto the sunlit lawn.
I took a deep breath, resting my hand on Liam's arm, and stepped out onto the flower-strewn aisle. The guests rose to their feet, but my eyes saw only one person.
Standing at the end of the aisle beneath an archway of white roses and ivy was Alessandro. He looked impossibly handsome in his bespoke tuxedo, but it was his amber eyes that took my breath away. They were filled with an intensity of love, devotion, and reverence so profound that the rest of the world simply faded into nothingness. Standing beside him was Marcus, holding fourteen-month-old Leo, who wore a miniature bow tie and was clapping his tiny hands with delight as he saw me approach.
When Liam placed my hand into Alessandro’s, Alessandro’s fingers closed around mine with a warmth that grounded my entire soul.
"You are breathtaking, Elizabeth," Alessandro whispered, his voice thick with raw emotion as he lifted my veil.
"You're not so bad yourself, billionaire," I smiled softly.
The ceremony was intimate, powerful, and deeply personal. We did not speak of corporate mergers, inherited empires, or past tragedies. We spoke of quiet mornings, shared coffee, enduring storms together, and building a sanctuary where our son and future children would always know unconditional love and safety.
"I, Alessandro Vitali, take you, Elizabeth Hart, to be my wife, my partner, and my equal," Alessandro vowed, sliding a magnificent platinum eternity band encrusted with flawless diamonds onto my finger. "I promise to protect your peace, to honor your dreams, and to stand beside you in every battle. You are my home, my truth, and the only light I will ever follow."
"I, Elizabeth Hart, take you, Alessandro Vitali, to be my husband, my confidant, and my forever," I replied, placing his wedding band upon his finger with steady, joyful hands. "I promise to walk beside you in the light, to share every burden, and to build a life founded on unbreakable trust. With you, I am never running again."
"By the power vested in me, I now pronounce you husband and wife," the officiant declared with a broad smile. "Alessandro, you may kiss your bride."
Alessandro wrapped his arms around my waist, pulling me against his chest, and kissed me with a passion that made the entire world spin. The crowd erupted into joyous cheers, rose petals rained down from above, and little Leo let out a delighted squeal from Marcus’s arms.
Later that evening, as the wedding reception danced under the starlit sky to the sounds of a live jazz band, Alessandro and I slipped away to the private stone balcony overlooking the moonlit lake.
I rested my head against his shoulder, his arm wrapped securely around my waist as we watched the distant Chicago skyline glow against the night sky.
"What are you thinking about, Mrs. Vitali?" Alessandro murmured, kissing the top of my head.
I looked out at the glowing lights of the city where we had fought so hard to reclaim our names, our family, and our future.
"I was thinking about the night I sat on that cold diner bathroom floor with two pink lines, terrified of what the morning would bring," I said softly, turning in his arms to look up into his beautiful amber eyes. "I thought my life was over. I had no idea it was only just beginning."
Alessandro smiled, his thumb gently caressing my cheek, his eyes reflecting all the stars in the midnight sky.
"The porch light will never go out, Elizabeth," he whispered, leaning down to press his lips against mine. "Not for you. Not for Leo. Not as long as I breathe."

And there, held in the arms of the man who had torn down empires to protect me, beneath the boundless Midwestern sky, I knew that our kingdom wasn't built of steel, glass, or billions of dollars.
It was built of love, forged in fire, and shining forever in the light.
