Chapter 13 - Blood and Ink

The private study on the forty-first floor of the Vitali Tower was silent save for the rhythmic ticking of an antique grandfather clock. Outside the double-paned windows, a violent winter squall lashed snow against the glass, obscuring the glittering lights of Lake Shore Drive.
Elena Rossi sat in a leather armchair, her head bowed, her wrinkled hands trembling in her lap. Standing in front of her, Alessandro looked as though he had been carved out of granite.
"Twenty-five years, Elena," Alessandro said, his voice flat, devoid of the warmth he had shown this woman for decades. "You organized my father's funeral. You were the first person who held me after Vittorio was shot. And you poisoned infants in my wife’s hospital."
Elena looked up, tears streaming down her weathered cheeks. "I didn't know they were going to put poison in the vials, Alessandro! God as my witness, I thought Julian was only planting forged financial receipts to force a settlement!"
"Why?" I asked, stepping forward from the shadows of the room, my arms crossed tightly over my chest. "Why betray the family that took care of you for a quarter of a century?"
Elena let out a ragged sob, reaching into her handbag and pulling out an old, faded leather-bound diary with a brass clasp. "Because Vittorio wasn't the man you think he was, Alessandro. And Julian isn't his son."
Alessandro froze. "What did you say?"
"Vittorio never had a child with Lucia Moretti," Elena whispered, opening the diary with shaking fingers. "Lucia’s first husband was Marco Moretti, the head of the Milanese syndicate. When Marco was assassinated by rival factions in 1988, Lucia was pregnant with Julian. She fled to Switzerland, begging Vittorio for protection."
Elena turned the pages, showing original handwritten entries in Vittorio Vitali’s bold, unmistakable script.
"Vittorio agreed to shelter her," Elena continued, "and to keep the rival syndicates from executing the unborn boy, Vittorio signed a ceremonial marriage certificate in Bellagio to claim Julian as his godson under the protection of the Vitali name. But it was a paper shield. Vittorio never consummated the marriage, and he never legally adopted Julian."
"Then why does Julian have a 1991 debt bond?" Liam asked, leaning over the desk to examine the entries.
"Because Lucia blackmailed Vittorio with it," Elena wept. "Twenty years ago, Lucia discovered that Vittorio and your father, Thomas Hart, were setting up offshore charity foundations to rescue young women escaping human trafficking in Eastern Europe. If the Italian syndicates found out Vittorio was funding anti-cartel operations, they would have slaughtered your entire family, Alessandro. So Vittorio signed that six-hundred-million-dollar bond as hush money to keep Lucia silent."
"And what did Lucia hold over you, Elena?" Alessandro demanded, his voice cracking with betrayed agony.
Elena closed her eyes in shame. "My daughter. Sophia. She’s studying music at the Milan Conservatory. Julian’s men picked her up outside her apartment three days ago. They told me if I didn't use your executive token to authorize their freight container, Sophia would be found at the bottom of Lake Como."
A heavy, suffocating silence blanketed the study. The villain was not Vittorio Vitali. He had been an honorable man who had spent his life shielding the innocent from wolves in bespoke suits, bearing the weight of dirty secrets so his son could inherit a clean world.
Alessandro knelt down in front of Elena, taking her trembling hands into his own. His anger had vanished, replaced by the lethal, focused resolve of a protector.
"Where is Julian holding your daughter, Elena?" Alessandro asked softly.
"A private estate in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin," Elena choked out. "Julian flew her into the country on his diplomatic transport yesterday to ensure I kept my mouth shut during the hospital investigation."
Alessandro stood up, turning toward Marcus and Liam. "Marcus, mobilize our tactical response team. Liam, contact the federal special operations task force that handled Mercer. We have twenty-four hours before Julian realizes Elena has confessed."
"What about the press conference tomorrow morning?" I asked, looking into Alessandro’s eyes. "Julian expects the board to vote on his takeover at noon."
May you like
Alessandro reached out, his hand cupping my cheek, his amber eyes burning with brilliant, unyielding fury.
"Tomorrow at noon," Alessandro said, "we aren't just saving this company, Elizabeth. We are putting the Moretti syndicate in the ground for good."
