Chapter 10 - The Sins of the Patriarch

By the third week of Leo’s life, our peaceful penthouse had been transformed into a high-security war room. Corporate attorneys from three different international firms occupied the dining room table, surrounded by towering stacks of Italian civil code, probate filings, and centuries-old trust documents.
I sat in the nursery upstairs, gently rocking Leo in my arms while nursing him. The nursery was painted in warm dove gray and cream, filled with soft music and the gentle glow of a nightlight, but the tension radiating from the floor below penetrated every wall.
The heavy front door downstairs chimed, followed by the crisp sound of security clearances.
"She's here," Liam announced, appearing at the nursery door with a grim expression. "Alessandro wants you to stay upstairs, Elizabeth. He doesn't want her anywhere near you or the baby."
"I am not hiding in my own home, Liam," I said firmly, fastening my silk blouse and placing sleeping Leo into his secure crib. "If this woman is here to contest my son’s birthright and destroy Alessandro, I am going to look her in the eye."
Liam sighed, knowing better than to argue with me. "Marcus has two guards stationed right outside Leo's door. No one gets in without a retinal scan."
I smoothed down my tailored black slacks and camel knit sweater, took a deep breath, and followed Liam down the grand curved staircase.
Standing in the center of the living room was a woman who commanded the space like an empress. Contessa Lucia Moretti-Vitali appeared to be in her late fifties, yet she moved with the predatory grace of someone half her age. She wore a tailored charcoal Dior coat with a sable collar, diamond earrings that caught the light with icy brilliance, and held an antique gold-topped cane. Standing beside her was a tall, sharp-featured man in his early thirties with dark hair, cold green eyes, and an unmistakable Vitali jawline.
"Alessandro," Lucia spoke, her voice smooth with a heavy Milanese accent. "You look remarkably like Vittorio when he was young. Full of pride, yet utterly blind to the foundations beneath your feet."
"Save the family nostalgia, Lucia," Alessandro said coldly, standing with his hands in his pockets before the floor-to-ceiling windows. "My father cut ties with the Moretti syndicate before I was born. If you think an unverified church document from 1988 gives you standing in an Illinois probate court, you're severely mistaken."
"Is it unverified?" Lucia smiled thinly, gesturing toward the young man beside her. "Allow me to introduce your elder half-brother, Julian Moretti-Vitali. Born in Milan, May 12, 1989. Registered with the Italian consulate, baptized under the Vitali crest, and verified by three independent forensic genealogists."
Julian stepped forward, extending a gloved hand toward Alessandro. "It is a pleasure to finally meet you, little brother. I understand you've been managing our father's assets with considerable... turbulence lately."
Alessandro ignored the extended hand completely. His amber eyes bore into Julian with absolute lethality. "You have five minutes to state your demands and leave this property before my private security removes you by force."
"We don't need five minutes," Lucia replied smoothly, turning her icy gaze toward me as I reached the bottom of the staircase. Her eyes swept over me with aristocratic disdain. "Ah. The former diner waitress who inherited a broken trust. How quaint. Tell me, child, did Vittorio tell you why your father Thomas Hart really died?"
My breath caught, but I kept my spine rigid. "Thomas Hart died because Arthur Vance and Mercer murdered him."
"Arthur Vance was an errand boy," Lucia laughed, a sound like glass breaking. "Your father was the chief auditor who discovered that Vittorio had pledged forty percent of the Vitali empire to the Moretti family to secure the Mediterranean shipping lines in the nineties. When Thomas threatened to expose the debt to the Securities and Exchange Commission, Vittorio authorized the syndicate to silence him."
"That's a lie," Alessandro snarled, stepping forward, his fists clenching. "My father left a ledger proving he was blackmailed!"
"Your father left a ledger that told you what you wanted to hear, Alessandro," Julian said calmly, pulling a certified Swiss bank bond from his leather briefcase and setting it on the coffee table. "This bond matured last Friday. It carries a debt repayment mandate of six hundred million dollars against the Vitali main treasury. If the debt is not settled by Friday midnight, the voting shares automatically transfer to the primary creditor: Moretti Holdings."
Julian looked directly at me, his green eyes glinting with cruel anticipation. "And if you attempt to contest this in court, we will freeze every foundation account tied to the Hart Medical Center. Every clinic, every pediatric wing, every research grant. You will be bankrupt before the first trial date is set."

Lucia adjusted her sable collar and turned toward the door. "We will see you at the Obsidian Winter Gala on Thursday, Alessandro. You can sign over the board chairmanship peacefully, or we can announce our claim before every investor in the Western Hemisphere."
With a sweep of her coat, Lucia and Julian walked out into the private elevator foyer, leaving a cloud of expensive Tuscan perfume and toxic devastation in their wake.
