Chapter 8: The Last Secret Emily Hid

The photograph on the wall changed everything.

Not because someone had been watching us.

I already knew that.

But because of the date.

Yesterday.

Someone had been inside Vanessa’s house while we were still discovering the truth.

Someone had been one step ahead.

I pulled the photo down.

My hands were shaking.

Emily stared at it.

“Ryan…”

“What?””

She looked terrified.

“I know where that picture was taken.””

I looked at her.

“Where?””

She swallowed.

“In our house.””

My stomach dropped.

“What?””

She pointed at the background.

A small corner of a room.

A painting.

A wooden shelf.

The edge of a curtain.

“You’re right.””

My voice became quiet.

“This was taken inside our bedroom.””

Emily nodded.

Richard hadn’t just been watching.

He had been inside.

The man who had controlled our lives had been standing inside the place where we slept.

I felt something inside me break.

Not fear.

Something else.

A realization.

I had spent years believing my home was safe.

It never was.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Emily looked at me.

“Because I didn’t know how far he had gone.””

“That’s not an answer.””

She looked down.

“I found a camera.””

The words stopped me.

“When?””

“Three months ago.””

I stared at her.

“You found surveillance equipment in our house?””

“Yes.””

“And you said nothing?””

“I was trying to protect you.””

I laughed bitterly.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

Emily flinched.

I regretted it immediately.

But the pain was there.

Years of missing memories.

Hidden children.

Lies disguised as protection.

I couldn’t separate love from betrayal anymore.

Then my phone buzzed.

A message.

From Richard.

“Come alone if you want Ava alive.””

Emily saw it.

“No.””

I looked at her.

“He has her.””

“We don’t know that.””

“We do.””

She grabbed my arm.

“Ryan, please.””

I looked into her eyes.

For the first time, I saw something beyond fear.

Guilt.

Deep, unbearable guilt.

“What else don’t I know?””

She went still.

That was my answer.

“What else, Emily?””

She sat down slowly.

“There is one thing.””

My chest tightened.

“I don’t think I can take another thing.””

She looked at me.

“You need to.””

The silence stretched.

Then she whispered:

“Ava wasn’t the only child Richard tried to hide.””

I felt the room disappear.

“What?””

Emily’s voice broke.

“Claire was pregnant when she died.””

I stared at her.

“No.””

“Yes.””

“Another child?””

She nodded.

“I don’t know what happened.””

I stepped back.

“How many secrets are there?””

“I don’t know.””

Her tears fell.

“I swear, Ryan, I don’t know.””

I looked away.

Because I believed she was telling the truth.

But the truth was still destroying us.

Then I heard something.

A sound outside.

A car.

Emily looked toward the window.

“That’s him.””

We moved carefully.

Outside, a black car sat at the end of the street.

The driver’s door opened.

But nobody stepped out.

Then my phone rang.

Richard.

I answered.

“Where is my daughter?””

His voice was calm.

“You always were emotional.””

“Where is Ava?””

“You want answers.””

“I want my child.””

A pause.

Then:

“Come to the old Whitmore estate.””

Emily grabbed my arm.

“No.””

Richard continued.

“Come alone.””

I looked outside.

The car was gone.

“He knows you’re here.””

Emily shook her head.

“He wants you separated.””

“Why?””

She whispered:

“Because that’s what he always does.””

I looked at her.

“What?””

“He isolates people before he destroys them.””

I thought about everything.

The missing memories.

The hidden children.

The lies.

The photographs.

Then I realized something.

Richard had spent years controlling what I knew.

But he made one mistake.

He underestimated Lily.

He underestimated Sophie.

And he underestimated Ava.

Because three little girls had done what adults couldn’t.

They had brought the truth into the light.

I turned to Emily.

“I’m going.””

She shook her head.

“Ryan—”

“No.””

I looked at her.

“But I’m not going alone.””

Her expression changed.

“What are you saying?””

I held up my phone.

“The whole time Richard thought he was the only one keeping secrets.””

I opened my messages.

There was one thing I hadn’t told Emily.

One message I had received before everything collapsed.

A message from someone claiming to know the truth.

A message I thought was a mistake.

Until now.

I showed it to her.

Her face turned white.

Because the sender’s name was someone she recognized.

Someone she thought was dead.

Claire Whitmore.

And beneath the name was a single message:

“Ryan, don’t trust Emily. She knows what happened to my baby.””
