Chapter 7: The Voice Behind The Door

For three seconds, nobody moved.

Not me.

Not Emily.

Not even Sophie.

The entire kitchen froze around the sound of Ava’s terrified breathing coming through the phone.

“Ryan?””

Her voice was barely there.

A whisper.

A child trying not to be heard.

“I’m here.””

I forced myself to sound calm.

But inside, I was falling apart.

“Where are you?””

There was a pause.

Then Ava whispered:

“I don’t know if I’m allowed to tell you.””

My grip tightened around the phone.

“Who told you that?””

Silence.

Then a small voice answered:

“Everyone.””

I looked at Emily.

Her face had gone pale.

“Ryan,” she whispered, “put her on speaker.””

I did.

“Ava, my name is Emily.””

The moment Emily spoke, the line went completely quiet.

Then Ava said:

“I know.””

Emily closed her eyes.

“You know who I am?””

“Yes.””

“How?””

Ava’s voice trembled.

“Because I have your pictures.””

The words hit Emily like a punch.

“What pictures?””

“The ones in the blue box.””

Emily stepped backward.

I noticed.

A tiny movement.

But I saw it.

“You know that box?””

She nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

I looked at her.

“What is she talking about?””

Emily didn’t answer.

Ava continued.

“Mommy said I couldn’t look at them.””

My heart raced.

“Who is Mommy?””

Another pause.

Then:

“Her name is Vanessa.””

Emily whispered something I couldn’t hear.

I looked at her.

“You know that name.””

She didn’t deny it.

“Yes.””

“Who is Vanessa?””

Emily sat down.

“She was Claire’s best friend.””

The room felt colder.

“Ava’s mother?””

“No.””

Emily shook her head.

“She’s the woman who took Ava after Claire died.””

I closed my eyes.

Everything was becoming darker.

Another person.

Another lie.

Another secret.

“Why would she take her?””

Emily looked toward the stairs.

Because Sophie was listening.

Because my family had become a house full of children carrying secrets they never asked for.

“Because Richard made her.””

My stomach tightened.

Before I could ask more, Ava spoke.

“Daddy?””

“Yes?””

“Is Sophie there?””

I looked at the little girl standing beside Emily.

“Yes.””

Ava started crying softly.

“I always wanted to meet her.””

Sophie stepped closer to the phone.

“Hi.””

A tiny voice answered.

“Hi.””

The two girls were silent.

Two sisters.

Separated by years of lies.

But somehow connected.

“I’m Sophie,” my daughter said.

“I know.””

“How?””

Ava whispered:

“Because I saw you.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Ava became quiet.

Then she said:

“In my dreams.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

Not because I believed in anything impossible.

Because I realized these children had both been surrounded by the same missing piece.

Me.

“I need you to tell me where you are,” I said gently.

Ava sniffed.

“I can’t.””

“Why?””

“Because he’s here.””

Everyone froze.

“Who is there?””

I already knew.

But I needed to hear it.

Ava whispered:

“Grandpa.””

Emily grabbed the counter.

“No.””

The fear in her voice was immediate.

Richard.

He wasn’t just connected to the past.

He was connected to now.

“Ava,” I said carefully, “listen to me. Can you get somewhere safe?””

“I tried.””

“What happened?””

“He locked the door.””

My heart stopped.

I stood up.

“Ryan,” Emily said, “you can’t go alone.””

But I was already grabbing my keys.

“I’m going.””

“You don’t know where she is.””

I looked at my wife.

“Then help me.””

For a moment, she just stared at me.

Then something changed.

The fear disappeared.

Not completely.

But enough.

Emily picked up her phone.

“I know where Vanessa lives.””

I looked at her.

“You knew?””

“I suspected.””

“Emily.””

“I didn’t know for sure.””

I wanted to be angry.

I was angry.

But there was a child waiting for us.

A child who had spent years believing her father forgot her.

We moved quickly.

Before leaving, I found Lily sitting on the stairs.

She had tears in her eyes.

“Daddy?””

I stopped.

My heart broke.

She had already seen too much.

I walked over and picked her up.

“Hey.””

“Are you leaving?””

I held her tighter.

“Not forever.””

“Promise?””

I looked at my daughter.

The first child I thought I had.

The child who had accidentally uncovered everything.

“I promise.””

She touched my face.

“Bring her home.””

I froze.

“How do you know?””

Lily shrugged.

“She’s my sister.””

The simplicity of those words almost destroyed me.

Children understood love better than adults ever did.

The drive to Vanessa’s house felt endless.

Emily sat beside me, staring out the window.

Neither of us spoke.

Finally, I asked:

“When were you going to tell me?””

She didn’t look at me.

“I don’t know.””

“That’s the problem.””

“I know.””

Her voice cracked.

“I thought if I waited long enough, Richard would stop looking.””

“But he never did.””

“No.””

She swallowed.

“He never stops.””

When we arrived, the house looked ordinary.

That was the terrifying part.

A normal house.

A normal street.

A place where someone had hidden my daughter.

I stepped out of the car.

Emily grabbed my arm.

“Ryan.””

I turned.

“What?””

“If we find Ava…”

She hesitated.

“What?””

“She may not remember us.””

I looked at her.

“She called me Daddy.””

Emily nodded.

“But she was raised by someone else.””

I looked at the house.

A light was on upstairs.

A child’s bedroom.

My daughter was inside.

And someone had kept her away from me.

“I don’t care what she remembers.””

I walked toward the door.

“She’s my daughter.””

I knocked.

No answer.

I knocked again.

Still nothing.

Then we heard it.

A sound from inside.

A child crying.

I tried the door.

It opened.

Too easily.

“Hello?””

No answer.

We stepped inside.

The house was silent.

Too silent.

Then a voice came from upstairs.

“Daddy?””

I stopped breathing.

Ava.

“Ryan.””

I ran upstairs.

The bedroom door was closed.

Locked.

“Ava?””

“Daddy!””

I grabbed the handle.

“Step back.””

A small voice answered:

“I’m scared.””

“I know.””

I looked at Emily.

She nodded.

Together, we forced the door open.

The room was empty.

No child.

No bed.

Nothing.

Except a small piece of paper on the floor.

I picked it up.

Three words were written on it.

“You were late.””

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

A familiar voice spoke.

Richard.

“You should have stayed away.””

My blood ran cold.

“Where is my daughter?””

A pause.

Then he said:

“Ryan, you still don’t understand.””

“What?””

“You were never looking for Ava.””

Silence.

“You were looking for the truth.””

The call ended.

And behind me, Emily screamed.

I turned.

Because on the wall of the empty bedroom was a photograph.

A photograph of me.

Taken yesterday.

Standing inside my own house.

Watching the hidden door open.

Someone had been following us.

May you like

Someone had been watching everything.

And they had been much closer than we realized.
